He represents that he can achieve great things and that he still has the capacity to enjoy his life. The only problem I have with what he did is that he apologized for his actions, rather than just admitting that he did it. In apologizing he under minds his own stance on what he feels is acceptable behavior and accepts a code of conduct that shows that puts him in the wrong. He should have never done that.

He may represent America while playing in the Olympics, but America represents individual freedom and individual achievements. He earned the medals through his own hard work and has no responsibility to the American people outside of wining those. We'd be asking him to sacrifice his own individual freedom to represent us, which would be hypocritical in itself.

WTF. So when was a pro (Olmpic) athliete not in the wrong for hittin the ---- out of a bong? You people act like he did nothing wrong. The mother ****** is a god dam 8 gold medal winner in the ------- olmpics, got busted for hitting a bong. What is not wrong with that. If thats the case, good ole mike vick is as innocent as can be. So is jose conceico and all of those other ***** who were doing speed and everything else. Who cares. They are pro athlietes...let them go.
I think its ------- rediculious that you ***** are even standing up for this douche bag.

He was smoking weed, not fighting dogs. The cases are not related and using that as an example makes your argument weaker. You need to argue why he's wrong for breaking a law that in his victories, he manages to prove is entirely arbitrary.

There's nothing unamerican about recreational drug use. He enjoys himself, and his freedom and he is responsible enough to handle his own business and be the best at it. There's not really anything more American than that. It proves that you can lend a good amount of freedom and responsibility to an individual, and they'll still have the ability to take care of themselves and possibly be the best at what they do.

The issue at hand is the fact the mother ****** is a god dam medal winning 'hero' olympic swimmer. He is a role model to probably thousands of kids/people all around the ------- world...and its ok for him to smoke weed? Geat real dude. So now the messege is "ok kids, go out...do great at swimming...if you happen to win, come back and hit the bong. its the American thing to do?"

How is vicks case any different. Both are illegal. Him fighting dogs didnt hurt him in playing football at all. Nothing un- about fighting some dogs...hell that claimed it was 'in his culture' IIRC. Nothin unamerican about drug use? wtf. Since when and where in the USSA is it legal for recreational drug use?

So terrible to see that it's possible for a person that smokes pot to be more successful than those that don't

I can see the "role model" side of things, but I still think it's bullshit that he's now a horrible person because he did something that some thing is an evil vice. If he's able to responsibly use a drug that doesn't harm anyone but himself, what's the big deal? If my kids smoked and were Olympic gold medalists, I wouldn't think poorly of them. If they smoked, got a college degree, and led a successful career, I wouldn't either.

It's sad that everyone is expected to be completely PC if they're ever in the media.

Nobody should have to change their lifestyle because kiddies mimic them instead of thinking for themselves.

The only problem I have is he cashed in on some endorsements. When you're the face of a company (or several in his case) you have a duty to maintain the image you sold.

He may be a role model to kids, but he's allowed to do whatever he wants. I don't have a problem with it, but then again I don't have a 10 year old with a Michael Phelps poster in his room. Meh.

I have to say, I don't know too many kids that watch national news enough to even know he did this, or even understand what he did. If kids are following someone's example so closely that they're smoking because they saw Phelps doing it, than their parents are doing a horrible job.

I don't believe all this "well he's a role model for kids" BS. Personally, I never was interested in someone enough do what they do, but maybe that's because I try to decide what to do on my own instead of following everyone else...
