i've taken autobody for 2 years now and the key is prep and knowing how to properly use the gun and paints for a garage project make life a little easier and cheaper on your self and use a single stage paint. lol if its your first time find some one with a buffer that you can use

I just got done reading the "Pro Autobody" book, and it was real good. The only problem with the book is that it leaves you with the feeling that you shouldn't be doing it in your garage, when reality says it's fine as long as you know what you should be doing.


It's kinda like how Greddy would tell you there's no way you can build a turbo kit as good as thiers in your garage. That's kinda how I feel.

The last chapter was about how to take care of the finish (washing/waxiing ect.) and the guy says he has show cars that he painted 15 years ago that he's never washed. :o Chapter was kinda show oriented and made you feel like you are ------- the car up by washing it. Ahh ---- it. I'm gonna paint the ---- anyway. >:D

Get the DUPONT two stage(base coat, clearcoat) paint with the hyper cure clear. This stuff is awesome. Any idiot Can make a decent paint job using it. Just spray the color on untill it covers everything. If you get runs sand them out and respray that area. The color coat drys flat so there is no skill needed, just keep spraying untill its all one color. When its dry and you have sanded all the orange peal and bugs out lay on a thick coat of clear. The same thing applies here, you cant screw it up. the clear gets tack free in about 15 to 30 minutes. At this point you sand out anything you dont want in the finish. Then buff the car with cutting past, then rubbing compound, then finnish glaze and finnaly mirror glaze. It's a lot of work but you can get a show quality finnish if you try. If you wait too long to buff(over an hour) its like buffing concrete. I clear one section at a time, like the roof and quarters, Then the doors and fenders, then the hood and bumpers. its less work and gives you more time to buff each piece.
Thee is no easy first time back yard paint job. ts a lot of work to get it to loo like anything. The best tip anyone will give you is to get the car good and clean before you try to paint. Armorall or tree sap will cause fish eyes(holes in the paint) if you get fish eyes you can add fish eye reducer to the paint before you spray the next coat. Add flex agent to the paint you put on bumpers and dont add too much of anything to the paint or it will orange peal.
Get a GOOD respirator. The $20 ones from the hardware store will not work. Get one from the same place you get your paint. Most automotive finnishes will cause permanent lung damage and can cause heart problems.
