haha, I actually did this today. I found a couple books on the subject. Most of them very dated with minimum pictures (not my reading style). I ended up getting "Pro paint and body" by Jim Richardson (2002) and the monster garage "how to custom paint damn near anything" (2004) that won't really be applied to the stealth shuttle but should show some cool techniques to keep the mind thinking. |

Paintwork is 90% prep...spraying is the easy part...it's the prep work that sux ass. I've even spray-canned a few cars just for the hell of it, and if the prep work is done right, most people couldn't even tell. I can honestly say that you will never do as much sanding in your life as you will getting a car ready for paint. :P

it is possile. I've seen it done and I'm a bodyman/painter. its all air circulation and the direction of that air. ohh not to mention where you windows are at in your garage. you want to seriously clean you garage b4 you start painting. you dont want dust off the floor to get on your paint. 2nd you want to set up fans lightly blowing down and i mean lightly. then put fan blowing across the car. from the front slightly angled down. this fan setup will blow and away and push down all the overspray. they call this a crossdown draft. its the best for garage setup. oohh leave the garage door open a crack so it pulls air out. and dont spray the whole car at once. keeps down on overspray.

Yes you can have a high quaility paint job without a paint booth. I paint all the time in my garage and always comes out nice. The trick is to install lots of florecent lights in the garage. In my last garage I had eight of them so it was super bright and I could see what I was doing. And AWAYS WEAR A MASK!!! Just be sure that the ceiling is dirt free and you put water on the floor. This keeps dirt down. I think that the most important part of a paint job is prep work and clearing. There is way more to it than that but thats the main part. You can always tell a great body man if he doesn't have to buff the car after he paints it. Many reasons. Skill, a $600 paint gun or he went to school. I don't think that you can just read a book and do some body work and paint your car the first time and expect it to come out like a factory paint job. I would think that if you did it that way it would be lots of trial and error or just go ask someone to teach you and work at a bodyshop for free for about two months to get pretty good. Most bodyshops won't hire you without a diploma. so have fun with your painting. I always do. Oh and get that book Steathmode recomended. How to custom paint damn near anthing. In the front of it it shows how to do bodywork and you can get lots of pointers from it. Ignore the rest of the book.
