OBX LSD First hand experince?

So are these things holding up. I really need something for the drag car and the more I think about it a welded diff and snapping an axle with the welded diff just doesnt seem like a smart or safe choice.

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

not first hand, but 1.5 hand i suppose, haha. it works, but don't expect anything like a quaife. but can't complain with the price. It was pulled out though for an upgrade. Application was a drag car with an H2B.

Used a couple now and they work perfect.Good idea to strip it down and reassemble with upgraded Beleville washers and re tourqe etc.You can order new washers from this guy rich_bryant_is@yahoo.com and the write up is http://www.marcuccimotorsports.com/j...eplacement.pdf or the honda tech one at http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1752849&page=1.They are a good unit and i will never buy a Quaife as the OBX works exactly the same and is not $500 overpriced. There is no way a diff the size of a something from a ATV should cost more then a third member for a 9" :3

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

Been using mine for well over 6 months with no complants. I'm only pushing a little over 200hp, but live in the mtns, and have gone to the drag strip a couple of times. Also, I have a friend with a DA pushing 400hp, also with no issues. I think they got the new units fiqured out, just don't buy an older one.

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

from what iv read and herd the main problem is that you just have to fix the washer problem and clean the insides torque them down to spec. Im buying one when i finish my vitara build. ;D

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

Any update on this chris? I went to an autox the other day with an open diff and didnt get any traction whatsoever... So frustrating and it pissed me off because I made this car to be cheap but now I gotta pay up. Screw quaife charging that much (if i got one used thatd be cool) but obx looks like a good alternative.

HT advice I found:

Whether its good or not if I'm putting thousands into other parts of the engine, etc... I would not skimp on something important like the diff, don't be a cheap ass and buy a Quaife.

i love my obx.
transmits power nice and evenly between both tires nicely and hooks up beautifully. never had any problems with it at all.
no reason to ever get a quaife

There has been over 600whp ran through these with multiple passes down the track at those hp levels.---- Quaife and there overpriced ----.

TorganFM 10-28-2007 10:15 PM

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

---- Quaife? ---- lifetime warranties? Because that's what you pay for when you get a Quaife.

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

I bought a used OBX diff that was locked up, not sure how but when we took it apart the gears were all jammed together. seems the gears just have too much slop in them. But after the diff was taken apart and put back together its seen 11.1's@128 with 1.6 60' without any probs since. If i can find a used quaife for a hunderd or so more then a obx id but it if not ill probably rock the POS obx :-\

Is there an OBX LSD for b16 cable trans? I've been getting some mixed results on HT and google. J1 non-lsd ???

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

chris,

have one in my turbo lsvtec ef drag car.

on the drag radials and street tires, no issue.

on the slicks, every couple of runs we'd notice in the burnout box that the car would be pull to the left as one of the wheels wouldnt spin. Only happend the one weekend at the track, every other time we didnt seem to have an issue. 300+ at the wheels, with slicks and drag axles and it took the abuse, no issues.

Bone1 10-29-2007 04:36 AM

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

quadtech, you do understand how a TorSen diff works right? If one wheel spins too easy in the water box (WTF you doing IN the waterbox anyways?) as if the whell was in the air, TorSen/Quaife/OBX isn't gonna do anything.

Yes, there is a OBX LSD for the cable trannys, same ring gear bolt pattern (small) as the B16/LS Hydro diffs.

Ya ---- a severly overpriced diff that should cost half of what it does.Lifetime warranty comes on damm near anything you buy these days its a marketing scheme.

So 3 OBX or 1 Quaife... I guess its worth it if you have a TON of power and its at major risk

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

If you look around you can get an ITR LSD for a reasonable price off ebay. I picked up one with bearings and ring gear for less than an OBX. I bet the obx is stronger but i have faith in the reliability of the oem unit and i am not making insane power.

Bone1 10-29-2007 04:39 PM

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

I've seen ITR diffs explode on NA power, they suck like that.

Re: OBX LSD First hand experince?

I suppose, but I'd need to compare that to Quaife's to get a fair interpretation of the meaning. I'd hate to have OBX say "You installed it wrong" and be screwed.

hey bone.. i have been wanting to use one of those OBX's in my zc tranny forever!! i know i have to use the crx si one but i dont want to go back to unequal length axles.. anyway around this or could i use one from a cable B or something??

There are quite a few guys out here that have been using them for a while. One a prominent shop owner with a 500+whp civic who seems to like it a lot.

your screwed then.

IF your lucky you might find a Cusco or Mugen DOHC ZC LSD, but it won't be cheap. Go OBX, small axle seals, normal axles.

While a cable diff itself will fit in the tranny, there are three MAJOR ISSUES to why it won't work. Don't worry why, it just won't.

i can see why they wouldnt work.. shimming it and bearing size.. so you think it would be worth it to swap out to one and back to unequales? i have been looking for a zc diff forever.. they are hard as ---- to find
