NOPI Phoenix SUCKED!

Just got back from the NOPI event here in Phoenix. It sucked! ClutchMasters was the only decent sponsored team that showed up. There were several of the smaller teams, like Sitezinger (sp). It seemed like there were only three to five cars for each class. I got so tired of waiting between rounds, that I left and came home before the final rounds even started. The have increased the drifting portion of the event, but even that hand only one small portable grandstand for viewing.

Totally disappointed. Have any of you hit any of the other, or plan to hit any of the NOPI events in your area?

NOPI....err...you look at their store? Hell that says enough. That place sucks. I don't go to any Import shows or anything anymore. Not to mention they cost an arm and leg to get in.

Oh Yeah, I completely for got to bitch about the cost to get in, $30! plus $7 for parking! I doubt I'll attend next years event.

Wanna know why import racing is dead imo. All the events in california are maybe 2000 people. All gross roots guys all motor street is the only class that has a full field, ya wanna actually have fun and have good races build an all motor car. No repeat no big sponsered cars ever show up. If bisi shows up its huge. Turbo cars that still run 10's. Its not what it once was and really dont see it every going back. Simple fact comes down to to many kids trying to build there own ----,everyone thinks they are masters because of sites like honda-tech. They destory a perfectly good car and swear hondas suck. Then sells the car for nothing and asks his parents for a 20k loan to get a lifted truck.

+1.Nopi doesnt come to fl anymore due to low attendance for that reason.I'm lucky the tampa scene here is still pretty strong and we have pretty good local track events/test and tunes with better cars than nopi ever brought/attracted.

it comes down to the area. Import racing in california use to bring out 25,000+for an event and they were a blast tons of racing records broken etc

Can't say that I had ever even considered going to a NOPI event. Everything that I have seen from their site, advertisements, TV shows, etc has made me think that it would suck.

Re: NOPI Phoenix SUCKED!

The problem with import racing is that all of us got into this ---- because we were poor. Next thing you know Nopi/NHRA wanna make the whole thing out to be this John Force style of racing where everyone is a "pro". They focus on the "pro" cars (not even real cars anymore) and ---- on the grassroots guys that started the whole thing.

Meanwhile, California speedway sells out a 4pm street legal night at noon, and has to turn everyone else away, while Nopi/NHRA scratch their heads and can't figure out why there are only 3 cars in each class exept sfwd and all motor (most grassroots classes they have).

Cut the nation into divisions and we can all have divisional races closer to home, WITHOUT CIVICS WITH WHEELIE BARS ::) and then the top divisional racers will meet in Colorado or something for a final race of the year.

Can I get a Amen.
Well said, that is exactly what happening, and the same thing happened with NMRA and WFC, they turned into a race of wallets and neglected there roots. But I think they are starting to shape back up.

Bisi was at Firebird, so why wasn't this huge?

Only 3 cars in the Pro Stock Class.......the 4th car never made the call.

Re: NOPI Phoenix SUCKED!

Here's how the chain went wrong

American car buffs laugh at import racing
Imports get really popular
Ford and Chevy start making 4 cylinders to be riced out
We change the name from imports to sport compact (------ gay)
NHRA/Nopi come in to make cash and focus on Steph Papadakis in a tube chassis car
NHRA/Nopi forget about the single cam turbo'd civics looking for a place to race
GM comes in, throws tons of money into "pro" rwd and fwd cars and races themselves in the finals
All the original poor kids with 11-14 sec. hondas race at street legal night, or idrc/boti
NHRA/Nopi kill the whole thing, and once they leave losing money we can start over and do it right.

In the end, I think they'll figure it all out that all the "pros" they wanted to focus on weren't really pro anything at all, except they could come up with the money to build a half assed car to lose to GM until they were broke.

I think it already is done too. I have said for years not to support NHRA. Those fuckers ruined my sport. The first event they did was a partnership with IDRC at pomona. Huge turnout. My friend goes to the finals in turbo quick 16 class. Racing was awesome. Within 2 years he quit racing NHRA due to total bull ---- he qualified #1 at 2 races and he was disqualified for complete crap that didnt even apply to the rulebook both times. Simple fact they had who they wanted to win. Not some ugly home built chop top bondo piece of ---- that ran 9.40-9.60's driven by a white trash kid from the High Desert.

Oh and for IDRC what did they kid for helping NHRA to the point that they only have 3 races this year and the payouts at races are the lowest of any racing import circuit. I fell bad for those guys they thought they made it big and got ---- on.

Dont forget about edelbrock and JG too.

:y I remember about 7 years ago there was a Car and Driver article about drifting( they might have called it something else, I got rid of the mag a long time ago) and it was pretty much all camaros and rwd v8 cars that put skinny little tires on the rear and slid around a parking lot somewhere in Hawaii.

Worst thing that ever happened to me was I skidded across a drainage ditch that I couldn't drive back across. An old farmer got out of bed at 1 am and pulled my car back across with a chain, wouldn't take any money from me. Good times.

drifting was done. yes. now its scored. thats the difference. Hell, I use to haul ass into the school parking lot sideways...but never called it drifting.

---- drifting. I heard hotrex is a big time drifter now in a volvo. <- this is where 'drifting' is going.

You do realise the brick era Volvos are cheaper, more luxurious, more reliable, and about as fast as a stock Civic? They're great beaters, dude, and cops don't hassle you in them.

Re: NOPI Phoenix SUCKED!

make it simple

street classes:
uni-body, no tube-front or fiberglass front ends. working lights, stock dash, weight based on displacement, no alchohol, no lexan, no wheelies bars. real street ----, no factory sponsors

FWD: 4 cyl only
All-motor
Turbo or N2O
2 power adders

RWD/AWD: 4 or 6 cyl and 2 rotar rotaries 3.0l max displacement
all motor
turbo or N2O
2 power adders

pro classes: tube frame, stock wheelbase, weight based on displacement almost anything goes pretty much

FWD: 4 cyl only
All Motor
turbo, N2O, blower any combo

RWD: 4 or 6cyl and 2 rotar rotaries 3.0l max displacement
All motor
turbo, N2O, blower any combo

keeps the pro classes smaller, for better competition. and plenty of classes for street guys. any of the big name shops building street cars will go for the 2 power adder class or the N/A class. most average guys on the street that are fast will be running just turbo anyways, all motor street guys will have some tough competition but peopel that build N/A motors have deep pockets anyways. there are always people who dont like the way classes break down no matter how you do it but this seems to keep it simple and quite competitive.

and if you have the balls, the machine and the safety equipment trying the next class up is on you

Eville140 03-19-2007 09:38 AM

Re: NOPI Phoenix SUCKED!

Also make a no stickers or names on the sides of the car rule for anything other than the pro cars. That would help a ton in keeping it more affordable.

Guys, ---- the pro classes. They're only there to divert attention from the racers which import racing became popular. If you wanna be a pro drag racer, go to the NHRA powerade events. Import racing isn't about your fucken renegade tractor and and matching helmet.

NOPI was "hot" in like 1999. It's 2007, they need to find something else to do. Nobody cares about them really anymore... they should start selling "drift" stuff. What on this green earth would posess someone to change their stock, in perfect working order doors on their Civic to "Z0mG lAmB0 d00rs!"
so stupid.
