Nitromethane burns very quickly and at a very high temperature...like 2500C. Its got like a quarter of the energy density of regular gas but it only needs a tenth of the oxygen of regular gas because oxygen is already part of the compound. Overall the engine runs cooler because of the higher mass flow rate of the fuel. Usually its a methanol/nitromethane mix.

we used at add the really high octane gas from my friends race car to his bolt on rex. made his car feel faster, and the headers glowed a really cool orange, but his ground strap didnt like it too much and melted in half.
