At autozone you can leave a deposit and they lend you a scanner. Just make sure you put the receipt in your glove box and don't touch it or look at it so it don't get lost til the day you return the scanner, otherwise you're gonna end up with a $175. autozone credit.

Re:New car now check light

ive had this same problem on my 90 dx hatch. what i used to do is soft reset the ecu, while driving when the light comes on. you can just turn the engine off then back on really quick (dont lock your steering wheel). this resets the ecu and makes the check light go away for a while. what i later found out is that my fuel pump was assed out and there was some sort of electrical problem that caused it not to send fuel to the injectors at random times. its likely that your fuel pump is going out too if you have starting issues, usually after idling or first starts. the way to bypass that issue is you have to rev the engine above 5000rpms and turn off the ignition, and thats it to making start up again with no problems.

There is a light that blinks on your ECU on obd0 when you turn the ignition to the "ON" position.

Count the number of times it blinks
