I have Agent leeching Usenet, four browser windows, CCAttack, and Winamp 2.7 running. Sometimes I watch movies, but that requires I shut off a few things unless I jiggle power settings so the lappy runs at the full 700 Mhz. Anything Java-based and intensive (Azureus for torrents, or Trendmicro's Housecall) bogs the laptop down, so I typically shut everything down and load that stuff up before I go to bed or leave the house.

whoa there partner.

1. athlon = amd.
2. nvidia is just the GPU maker, they DO NOT make graphics cards they simply sell the graphics processing unit (GPU) to manufactures.

ok.. so in this ibuypower computer you're looking at, what brand mothboard (the BIG one you should not cheap out on). what brand memory? hard drives? hard drive spindle speed, cache? interface? is the motherboard AGP or PCI-Ex16? onboard? sound, lan, usb?

you don't need a modem, floppy drive, liquid cooling or a cd-rom (the dvd drive does it all).

simply get the computer i listed add a monitor and a keyboard/mouse ($40 tops) and you'll get better stuff for cheaper.

I dont mean to sound rude. but you came to us asking what to do, we've repeatedly told you to stay away from that ibuypower crap but you keep telling us its a better deal.

Just go buy that, but dont come crying when it dies in 6 months or is slow as crap or you cannot upgrade it cuz its a cheap *** motherboard.

like i already told you, tell me your budget and what you need to do w/ this computer and what little things like LCD, keyboard/mouse, speakers etc. and i will show u what to get.

Okay granted my ---- is way out of date now but I built my system for about 900 originally.

MSI K7N2 Delta 2 motherboard used
MSI FX5700LE video card
Corsair 2x512MB dual channel memory
AMD Athlon XP 3000+ retail package
Seagate SATA 1.5 Gb/s 80 Gb w 8meg buffer
Sony CD RW DVD combo drive
Microsoft Internet Pro mouse and keyboard
Dell black 19 flat screen CRT used
black midtower case that will handle a prescott P4 (if I were ever to go to the dark side )

Only thing that I have changed is the monitor because I wanted some desktop space and I like watching movies on widescreen

I built this thing almost 1.5 years ago and it still serves my needs extremely well.

If you want to save yourself some money you don't have to get the best of everything. Get components that will serve you well for a couple of years and allow you to upgrade as prices drop on things like processors and video cards.

DO NOT cheap out on the motherboard. This should be your most high end piece.

Buy a processor that is relatively inexpensive for the performance. High clock speeds don't necessarily make a computer fast or reliable. I realize that this is kind of moot with the high bandwidth buss these days, but the Intel Celeron series is a prime example of a high clock speed with and *** slow buss speed.

Above all, don't be afraid to assemble a PC yourself. They are fairly idiot proof. PnP makes it uber easy.

1. Forget water cooling, the cpu comes with its own cooler specifically designed for it.
2. forget a modem and that multi function panel, you need neither.
3. get a ANTEC case that comes w/ a power supply, a Sonata II is a good choice.
4. Asus SLI is overkill, get a Ultra-D or a newer 570 Ultra based board (dont forget to change the CPU to a AM2 Version).

should save $100-200 making these changes

dual core is baically two processors in one good for multitasking and some new games are starting to utilize it as well. And for memory you prolly mean duel channel. I wouldnt waste the money on a dual core processor unless you want to wait a few weeks till the new pentium dual cores come out.
