160gb seagate hard drive (sata) .................. 69.98
2x512mb Kingston HyperX........................... 53.98 ea x2 = 107.96 (each has a $25 mail in rebate)
BenQ DVDRW............................................. 39.99
AMD Athlon 3500+...................................... 155.25
eVGA 7600GS-512mb.................................. 188.10 -$10 instant rebate
Asus A8N-E motherboard NF4....................... 105.99
Antec Sonata II.......................................... 109.98
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total............................................. ............ 723.27 BEFORE rebates (-60 after rebates) + Shipping/taxes
Remember, thats all in CDN currency too!
I made some assumptions / changes based on things you did not list like the motherboard, case, dvdrw and brand names of things (like hdd etc). Even still hopefully you can now see how much they are ripping you off for. Most likely you are NOT getting a motherboard or case nearly as good as the ones i listed.
PM me your budget and EXACTLY what you expect to use the PC for (as well as small things you need like LCD? Keyboard/mouse? speakers?) and we'll figure something out. Ncix.com has an option to completely assemble it for you too.

LCD monitors are good for casual use, conserving energy and desk space. LCD monitors do not look better than CRT monitors, and theres not really an arguement for that other than CRT's are big, harder on your eyes, use more power, and put off more radiaton. But, LCD monitors are frail, pixles die, they're dimmer, and look hazey when compaired to a crt. The only reason id think about switching is so my room doesn't get so hot. But i dont want to spend that much on a monitor either.

Patient, how?
Most people's memories of this era equipment are from the age of dialup connections, which seriously bog a computer, and before spyware and suchlike was well known. I run my main i-net surfing laptop at 527 Mhz (700 Mhz stepping) and have nothing but crisp response from it, although XP takes a good minute twenty seconds to load. I don't play any games past NES/SNES emulator era, so.... raw computing power would be wasted on me.
The 866Mhz P3 is the Carputer, BTW. A bit big for the glovebox, but I think I can fit it under the pass seat after I trim the frame rail. It's the size of a really big hardcover... 12X9X4 or so.

Eh, I guess you have a point. You don't run many programs at one do you?
Still have a 450 Mhz. up and running in the basement. We have cable modem and that ---- is still slow as ----. Granted it is running XP, blech, with half the processing power. An 866 for the carputer ought to be more than ample. Unless you want to watch movies on one screen while you listen to music and run a GPS program at the same time. lol
