Locomotive. shit i deal with

so a few weeks ago we had a train engine runaway on us at the shop, by this i mean, batterys, fuel and air was all shut off, but it kept on going...heres some footage

supervisor = white hat
african americans = yellow

heres 16 cylinders of furry, going hard. these engines MAX rpm is 1250. the word is it was well over that running at 3000

- air intakes were blocked with cardboard and plywood, along with 6 dry chemical fire extinguishers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNkc6c5xXxg

- this is when the battery switch was pulled, along with the fuel pump breakers shutoff along with the injection pumps. so it decided to run off its own lube oil.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdESvCC0dxE

heres some more after we african americans gave up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7wKyiXt6ok

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCh_GTDmBfY

a few minutes after the last video she seized, bearings were screaming to the point where it hurt the ears. we took cover, waiting for some rods and pistons to take off.

the day before the pos let go, we replaced 2 power assemblys, and i got one of the pistons. this is a good way to spend 2 million bones

eh, i think this stems from oil leaking into the combustion chambers. since you need no power (just the heat and compression ) to get the diesel going, it runs. but when theres an oil leak, it just goes loose and never stops running untill it seizes.

was a question on cartalk radio on npr.

after we fix something, we have to take it out for running checks. check for water/oil/fuel leaks and what not. we do a load test where we put the locomotive in 8th notch, which is full horsepower, a engine like that produces 4200-4400 hp, with about 32-34lbs of boost. when the mechanic took it out of 8th notch and back to idle, the engine didnt follow and proceeded down its own path to destruction.

no one will get fired, wasnt anyones fault.

we dont do engine replacements at our shop, so i cant get any photos of the pistons, rods, crank, etc.

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

All of those videos could be described as a train at idle with smoke coming out. Where's the fucken carnage?

no one hit the fuel shut off valve?

You HAVE to close the valve, if not diesel will still get SUCKED in.

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

Yeah a runaway diesel is something that can't often be stopped. My first experience with such was after first moving to canada when I was 6, my uncle had his d6 cat dozer to the wall, started to run away, he grabbed a piece of ply wood to throw over the intake, and it broke and got sucked it, ran up till it was seized.

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

thats nuts, i wouldnt want anything to do with a runaway TRAIN engine. they had one run away at a branch store for a company i used to work for. it was a ford like f450 or something that the fuel from the injector somehow made its way into the valve cover and the valve train started "whipping" the oil annd fuel together and it expanded out the breather hoses, started running on that until it popped.
they pulled pistons out of the side of cars like 4 or 5 stalls down.

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

I'd dump a bag of sand down the intake and get it over with.. >:D

My b16 with 4 broken ringlands smoked just like that :6

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

fire hose or high pressure water hose would have stopped the smoking problem.

Re: Locomotive. shit i deal with

thats true, wouldnt a bunch of water in the intake cool it down so it couldnt run anymore. or at least hydrolock it. problem solved
