Im wanting a new toy

I am wanting to try something RWD but am wanting to do something a little different, not the usual 240.

I have been looking at the old 240z's and have decided thats the platform I wanted to tinker with. I am wanting to swap a sr20 in it and fab my own mounts. They dont look too complicated and I think it will be a fun project.

They come in around 2100 pounds with the sr20 swap. Also the engine sits behind the cross member basically making it a mid engine car.

Do any of you guys have any experience with these things? Google some images of them. They look sick with the right wheels and offsets. Plus the sr bottom end is good for 350 easy.

Re: Im wanting a new toy

Hardest part about a 240z is finding one that not the body or worse the unibody rusted away. :'(
Good luck hopefully where live it may not be as bad as a snowbelt '70 jap. car. ;D

Re: Im wanting a new toy

A friend of mine has a 240 with a SR. If I got another Z I'd just toss a turbo L28ET from a 280ZX. Their cheap and already come with a t3 manifoldIt bolts right in and can make some mean torque. Not to mention no matter what, the straight six sounds like sex. Hell Throw a RB25DET as they pretty much bolt right up. ---- if I'd throw a SR into it. Hell toss SBC into it and you won't have to worry about changing it over to FI. Not to mention it'll still sit behind the front axle like the SR would of or any other four cylinder. If I ever get another Z I'll just do a SBC swap and go from there. Check out HybridZ.org as the people there have swap any and everything into S30's. I've been a member there about as long as I've been a member here.

Re: Im wanting a new toy

SR20 are the most overrated engine ever.

Old school Z cars scream for V8 swaps, give then what they want.

Adam Hopkins 12-30-2008 07:07 PM

Re: Im wanting a new toy

Nothing screams put me in something like a FREE sr20 motor and tranny. Plus i just got nistune and I need a good excuse to play with it.

Yea I know sr's are overrated. But once again, FREE SR20. I will go to that site. Thanks.

Re: Im wanting a new toy

Come on, I would not swap the z with a de. This is homemadeTURBO.

stillnoturbo 12-30-2008 07:18 PM

Re: Im wanting a new toy

I'd take that free SR, sell it and buy an LT1 swap or just build up a nice small block. The SR in a Z is like K swap in civic. Just gives the ooh ahh factor.

Exactly so why are dropping in a DET? This is HOMEMADEturbo. This isn't factoryturbo'd.com

Re: Im wanting a new toy

Since you want to use nistune why not a v-8 out of a titan or infiniti. >:D
Kill two bird with one stone. Imagine a twin turbo v-8 with a well built factory v-8. >:D

Adam Hopkins 12-30-2008 07:24 PM

Re: Im wanting a new toy

1. The mounts and manifold will be homemade
2. If you think the turbo is going to be stock then you have mistaken me for a suckka
and 3. There will be JB weld, Flux core, and beer involved in the making of this car.

If you think NIstune has a program for a new Titan, you are confused. It has taken them this long to get a decent tuning software for a 1990's ecu. By my calculations it will be 2025 before they have something good for the cars produced today.

get a titan v8, and the adapter to run a 6spd frontier trans.

Wow I forgot rb25 or 26det that would be awesome.

stillnoturbo 12-30-2008 09:26 PM

Re: Im wanting a new toy

I forgot about the KA. You could still call it a 240Z with a KA but instead it'd be a 200Z with a SR. Now that's just wackadocious.

Adam, the more MAF cars I tune the more I realise MAF cars, and their owners, are completely retarded. You'll learn the hard way./

i vote for the ka-t but make it a single cam
won't make the power of the twin cam but you would be keeping the single cam screamer trend alive and they make nasty torque

Tune a couple, you'll go speed density so you don't have to be associated with the MAF stigma. ;)

sbc > any swap.

True Story.

I agree with the Injun, sell it and fund a V8 swap. Go find parrish's Fairmont with the 5.3 Vortec swap. factory Bench seat street car with a 9 sec time slip. alll you need is a wrecked work truck.

Re: Im wanting a new toy

Did you ever price out 1uzfe's? I think it's the best bang for your buck of any engine out right now. Check out this guys swap into a S14. He only dropped $2000 into his swap including the engine. I've seen these things dirt cheap on ebay and even at my local pick and pull as they only charge 150 for any longblock which includes any thing attached to the engine...starter,alt..yada yada. I was just looking around on ebay and they can be found starting from 350 buy it now

7M is a wierd engine, needs a lot of rework to make relaible power as it's based off a '60s design.

Re: Im wanting a new toy

If you're going to bastardize it, do it right with some rotary love.

Anything bigger/torquier is going to twist the Z car like a pretzel. I've heard bad things about those cars twisting under stock torque.

All motor itb 20b or 26b would be flat out tits.

Some company in austraila was making custom 4 rotor e-shafts. Dont know how much they retail for but if you search "4 rotor" on rx7 club, you'll see 1 or 2 custom builds. They aren't production 26b's, just 2 12a/13b engines put together with extended tension bolts and a 4 rotor e-shaft.
