If you have Comcast...

Reboot your modem June 3rd, your upload will go to 1mbps up on 6mbps speed, and 2mbps on the 8mbps service.

DOCSIS 3.0 crap is supposed to be out in the next year or two as well, much faster downloads and uploads.

thanks for the tip.

i havent had anything but good experiences with comcast. exceptional service (on site) and great customer service on the phone.

i actually switched away from Qwests DSL service and got the comcast triple play. couldnt be happier. at least my bills are accurate now.

Yeah, it really depends on the service reps and technicians you deal with. If they're incompetent you're gonna hate the company, if they know what they're doing you won't have any problems. I've heard people say they've had them for 10 or more years and never had a problem, and I've seen people that had problems from the first day.

Personally I've never had their service. I've had knology which was fine the year I had it, although the speeds never seem to be what was advertised. I've also had mediacom which was frequently out. I've used DSL and the speed sucks (although I know it depends on how far you are from the station).

If you don't restart on june 3rd, you'll still get it, but not for a week or two. When you restart the modems it checks the bootfile to make sure it's up to date.

o ---- is this for real?

I've had comcast forever now and no problems either. Great knowledgeable customer support, even when asking them about kinda random non related stuff they've been helpful. Always fixed all problems quickly. speed is pretty fast to me, don't have anything to compare it to though.

back in the day i was on dialup, it sucked ass... so i stepped up, got Verizon DSL :3 wow, what a bitch. DSL sucked, serivce sucked, customer service was unreachable...omg nothing like dealing with an automated helpline :7 then being on hold for 30min-2hours. oh, and we where always calling them to argue about them ------ up our bill or there shitty DSL not working, etc... :7 :7 :7

made the switch to Comcast Cable internet... omg, i NEVER have to call them to bitch about ----. always works, if there is an issue im having its aways been solved by just resetting the modem. infact when i moved into my current place i was just using shitty unsecure internet connections. i called Comcast at 10pm....was on hold for like 5seconds "hi, how can i help you?" they sent someone out 2 days later, of course from some big ass time frame of "8am-12pm". but thats cable company for ya. pretty sure it was a saturday too.

i will stick with comcast

Re: If you have Comcast...

Comcast recently bought out our local cable provider so I didn't really have a choice. So far I've seen the reliability and speed on certain websites decline. I've never had so many retarded disconnects with cable before, it got so bad not long ago that I thought I missed the bill or they didn't get it or something and they decided to just ---- with me.

I dislike the company already, but I don't have another choice.

i have comcast now and i really dont have any complaints, except that we have to check our bill to make sure its right, but they always remove the extra charges without any questions. and that problem has only been since i just recently moved. the 6 years of using them before that was flawless

No, you get charged off. They might stop sending collectors, but it'll be remembered on your credit report.

No companies are perfect, and some areas are worse than others. Just depends on the management in that area and who they hire.

I personally don't use them but it's not in my area.

I would take care of it before it goes to a collection agency. They will add on all kinds of "collection charges" once they get it.

I am sure Comcast would even take a long payment plan rather than selling to a collection agency for pennies on the dollar.

Again, depending on who he speaks to. The aren't supposed to open accounts for people that have accounts in collections, however it is possible and some people don't care enough to argue about it. Not to mention they get paid commission, so they'll be losing money by doing the "right" thing.

It's easy enough just to get it opened in someone else's name that lives in the house.

last time i did this, i was a good deal higher than that on the upload and about 15000 on the down.

wtf

plus the upload cant be right.

it was at 2400+kb/s during the entire test, and then when it hit 100% it dropped to 1000+kb/s and then recorded that score.

Re: If you have Comcast...

The network swap will not change your download speeds what so ever.

On cable when your modem initalizes it contacts it's host. The host looks up it's MAC address and sends an MD5 encrypted file to your cable modem. Said file contains your upload & download caps. If your modem is allowed to also be used as a basc router, and what priority your modem is on th line.
Back in the day you could spoof the host mac address, upload your own encrypted file and run whatever your line could actually handle. If the modem lost power, was re-set or attempted t re-connect youd loose it.

DSL works very similar, except all the programming is contained at the local server.

Comcast is very good. If you want ---- try Charter.
And DSL blows. It has short range, is far more affected alot more by interfferance, and is less reliable.
It has a 30-40% latency advantage (80ms VS 110ms), but is not capible of more than 1/3 the actual bandwidth cable can run.

That sums it up. Originally you could put the Motorola Surfboard modems in "engineering mode" and upload a new config file through ethernet. Now the hash is checked upon bootup and "corrected." Your service can also be flagged for altering the caps.

DSL does suck. My mother has it and it's max upload is 10-15kbps, down is 70-80kbps. Not to mention she's paying $70 a month. It's great to live in the sticks...

I've had Comcast, Knology, and Mediacom. Mediacom was the only one that gave me trouble.

I call BS, what provider? There are 1-2mbps uploads on cable here, I've never seen dsl offering that. Depends on who your service is with and how far from the station you are.

I remember doing that back in the day.

You can still uncap today. You just have to have a 5100 and hardwire in a couple wires and you can reflash it.

You can still flash them, but depending on your provider, when it fails the checksum your account can be flagged. You would have to flash it while the modem is locked onto a signal, which I don't think is possible (but am not sure). As soon as you boot up, at least on Comcast, your modem will be forced to download the official bootfile.

I wish I was electronically inclined enough to have it flash just the speed caps after it's on, kinda like how the ram-editing cheat stuff (gameshark, etc) works. Just not sure if it's possible to flash while it's on. Usually, not.

After modem reset still on wireless, i should plug in ethernet and see how fast it really is, why does wireless make it so much slower!

Wireless shouldn't make it much slower. Latency might increase and if encryption is enabled the speed might be slower, but niether will cause a noticeable difference.

If your network isn't encrypted, you probably have others using it. If you have other computers, see if they have programs running that use the connection, or if they have any malware.

If the network is encrypted, computers are "clean" and not running p2p programs, wireless shouldn't make much of a difference.

Also, linksys (and maybe some others) have the "keep connections alive" default at a pretty high amount of time. So every now and then you'll need to reset the modem to close them out. Or, get a custom firmware (like DD-WRT) or edit the settings...not sure if you can on oem firmware.

yea both laptops are clean, no malware or p2p.
it is encrypted so noone is on it, but there is a big difference when i connect through LAN, its weird.
I also set my laptops to only connect through wireless-G instead of the other modes so it would force it to connect with wireless g

Re: If you have Comcast...

If its only wireless then I'd try a different channel, maybe something is causing interference.

Being on wireless alone shouldn't slow the connection noticeably though.
