I dont know, Ive been thru more than a few 4g's, and to have one knocking so hard it flat-spotted the rod bearings and spun the bearing would take quite a while, not to mention knock that bad would have been VERY audible....Any even halfway knowledgable dsm tuner would have picked up on this very quickly. Its also doubtful you were knocking that badly only making 240ish hp ive gone farther than that on stock 14b's with 93oct and 0 counts of knock with the cam sensor set "about right" :6

Is this a stock 7bolt longblock? How tight was the oil filter? The 7bolt's oil filter housing has a stud that you screw the filter to, and your SUPPOSED to torque it everytime you change the filter lol. Ive had them backoff and spray oil all over the interstate before, not a fun experience, since you have full pressure and alot of oil flow, the engine can dump everybit of its capacity in like 5 seconds.

I wouldnt be too quick to blame the tuner...just my 2 cents.

ps, dsms break sitting still not running. Its not inconceivable that it just had its day.

Yeah I've had the problem with the oil filter. I think my oil slick is stil sitting on a back road out here somewhere hahahah. I actually didn't have any oil leaks while I was on the dyno. It could have been time for the engine to go but the log file still shows the knock. It was a stock 7bolt and as far as I know it had about 128k miles on it. I ran my car with the AEM for about 2 months before I took it to get fine tuned at the Tuner's shop. It didn't blow until after he started adjusting the timing. I think his dyno may have been reading low on the hp side. I was spiking 26psi and falling to 21 by redline on a small 16g. Compression was about 175 across all 4 cylinders the week before took it to the dyno and it had recetly had an oil change. I am almost positive it was detonation that caused the motor to go.

I backed the timing off about three degrees in boost, that way when the new motor goes in I shouldn't have to worry about det too much. I am gonna jst have to tune the timing down at the track.

I like how the car only gained 20hp after my tune. For all those that dont know I helped stickman tune the car, and It ran good, It just needed some top end fuel pulled out. Thats where the tuner got the 20 hp I didnt, But then again its hard to pull fuel out on the fly when you are doing 4th gear pulls on 35 mph streets. We should have done some logs and pulled the fuel out. But he thought that going to a local tuner that just got a awd dyno would be best and I could see the valid points. That way the tuner could get all the idle and cold start enrichments set up. But KABOOM!!!!! Time for a new motor, just wish he would have goten it on video. But it was bound to happen, its a dsm!!!!! lol :P

Is there any way you guys could post the logs? Id like to see them... You said it was aem ems right? Do you know what the knock frequency was set for? What sensor were you using? (id like to know for future ref. kthanx.)

Sucks about the engine ---- happens sometimes.

I didn't read all the responses, but IMO based on the first post...

17.5* of timing is nothing for 21psi on a 16G. I was peaking between 19-21* at 26psi on a T3/T04E 50 trim on 93 octane. If you were using the stock knock sensor, that voltage is pretty meaningless. Only the ECU knows (from previous experience and knock learning) at any given point how much of that is noise and what is real knock. Reading the voltage of the sensor means nothing.

Damn I'd take that for 175 in a heartbeat if I was local!

Unfortunately when you dont know everything (which no one does) you couldnt ever possibly link a motor blowing to one possible source...it would be nearly impossible unless you owned Mitsubishi Motors yourself and had an endless supply of test and forensic equipment at your disposal.

Motors have history and tuners have none of that history...most times, the owners dont either or they fail to mention the most important history notes until after something bad happens, like that information can help out now that the rod came out of the block. :-X

It all comes down to the fact that you got in this game and like it or love it, it has its ups and downs. If you think you should be madd at the tuner, blame yourself for going to that tuner...not the tuner for doing a poor job. If he can afford an AWD dyno, either his parent have millions to blow and that should have been pretty apparent, or he has done something in his tuning past pretty right, and no one is perfect.

---- happens...end of story.
