How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

Well after sitting in my yard for 2 months we finaly pushed Stickmans 97 gsx into the garage to swap out the Blown motor. Here is the carnage!!!!

Who would have guessed that a 4G63 at 22 psi 4800rpms and with a small 16g whoud have done so much, We went back over the logs from the AEM and it have over 3.9 volts of knock. The dude that tuned it said that it had no knock. We looked at the timing and he had it set to 17.5* I dont know mabey it was just time for the motor to go?

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

That looks familiar. Next time I am just gonna have to leave my car street tuned and not take it to the "proffesionals". And no more signing stupid ass waivers that say if the dumbshit tuning my car blows my motor that he is not at fault. I should get a copy of the contract and see if I can find a loophole in it. There has to be a dumbshit tuner clause somewhere in the lawbooks.

Anyone need and dsm block pieces?? I have a few laying around and a custom air cooled block too.

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your c

If you were using AEM, and logging knock...why the hell didnt you have it retard timing when it read knock?

There are plenty of things that can cause knock, but not using the safety features of an EMS (knock retard, boost cut, etc, rev limiters, etc)...AND if it was knocking that badly, I would guess the driver could hear or notice something and probably should have let off.

Regardless, there are WAY too many things that can cause knock mechanically...how long did it actually run after being tuned? Are we talking 6 minutes or 6 months??

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

^^^ Exactly what I was thinking. If you PAID someone to tune your aem, and they didn't even bother to set up something simple like that, and you failed to even look it over, I vote your friend ftl

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

All of this happened while on te dyno. I had the car hauled back to the house from the shop it was being blown up at. There was oil all over the brand new AWD dyno. I had no part in blowing the engine. I was actually kinda pissed off believe it or not.

did the shop try and help out in any way or just say that sucks have a nice day?

Prolly just "That sucks, can you move your car so we can clean our dyno?"

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

He pretty much said that sucks, you can store your car here for the weekend until it gets towed. He charged me for the tuning that he had accomplished before it blew and the dyno usage and one of his associates gave me a decent price on a flatbed tow. After all was said and done I got bent over and he wasn't even kind enough to use vaseline. From now on I am not going to let anyone else touch the tuning on my car. If i have to I will rent dyno time and do it myself. Of course at a different shop.

On a side note, it did make 243 awhp from 3800rpm to 7000rpm.The run before it blew.

You got fucked in the ass. I wouldn't have paid him a dime if it blew up, especially if it was pinging and he didn't retard the timing.

I dont know, Ive been thru more than a few 4g's, and to have one knocking so hard it flat-spotted the rod bearings and spun the bearing would take quite a while, not to mention knock that bad would have been VERY audible....Any even halfway knowledgable dsm tuner would have picked up on this very quickly. Its also doubtful you were knocking that badly only making 240ish hp ive gone farther than that on stock 14b's with 93oct and 0 counts of knock with the cam sensor set "about right" :6

Is this a stock 7bolt longblock? How tight was the oil filter? The 7bolt's oil filter housing has a stud that you screw the filter to, and your SUPPOSED to torque it everytime you change the filter lol. Ive had them backoff and spray oil all over the interstate before, not a fun experience, since you have full pressure and alot of oil flow, the engine can dump everybit of its capacity in like 5 seconds.

I wouldnt be too quick to blame the tuner...just my 2 cents.

ps, dsms break sitting still not running. Its not inconceivable that it just had its day.

Yeah I've had the problem with the oil filter. I think my oil slick is stil sitting on a back road out here somewhere hahahah. I actually didn't have any oil leaks while I was on the dyno. It could have been time for the engine to go but the log file still shows the knock. It was a stock 7bolt and as far as I know it had about 128k miles on it. I ran my car with the AEM for about 2 months before I took it to get fine tuned at the Tuner's shop. It didn't blow until after he started adjusting the timing. I think his dyno may have been reading low on the hp side. I was spiking 26psi and falling to 21 by redline on a small 16g. Compression was about 175 across all 4 cylinders the week before took it to the dyno and it had recetly had an oil change. I am almost positive it was detonation that caused the motor to go.

I backed the timing off about three degrees in boost, that way when the new motor goes in I shouldn't have to worry about det too much. I am gonna jst have to tune the timing down at the track.

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

I like how the car only gained 20hp after my tune. For all those that dont know I helped stickman tune the car, and It ran good, It just needed some top end fuel pulled out. Thats where the tuner got the 20 hp I didnt, But then again its hard to pull fuel out on the fly when you are doing 4th gear pulls on 35 mph streets. We should have done some logs and pulled the fuel out. But he thought that going to a local tuner that just got a awd dyno would be best and I could see the valid points. That way the tuner could get all the idle and cold start enrichments set up. But KABOOM!!!!! Time for a new motor, just wish he would have goten it on video. But it was bound to happen, its a dsm!!!!! lol :P

Is there any way you guys could post the logs? Id like to see them... You said it was aem ems right? Do you know what the knock frequency was set for? What sensor were you using? (id like to know for future ref. kthanx.)

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your car!!

I didn't read all the responses, but IMO based on the first post...

17.5* of timing is nothing for 21psi on a 16G. I was peaking between 19-21* at 26psi on a T3/T04E 50 trim on 93 octane. If you were using the stock knock sensor, that voltage is pretty meaningless. Only the ECU knows (from previous experience and knock learning) at any given point how much of that is noise and what is real knock. Reading the voltage of the sensor means nothing.

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your c

Unfortunately when you dont know everything (which no one does) you couldnt ever possibly link a motor blowing to one possible source...it would be nearly impossible unless you owned Mitsubishi Motors yourself and had an endless supply of test and forensic equipment at your disposal.

Motors have history and tuners have none of that history...most times, the owners dont either or they fail to mention the most important history notes until after something bad happens, like that information can help out now that the rod came out of the block. :-X

It all comes down to the fact that you got in this game and like it or love it, it has its ups and downs. If you think you should be madd at the tuner, blame yourself for going to that tuner...not the tuner for doing a poor job. If he can afford an AWD dyno, either his parent have millions to blow and that should have been pretty apparent, or he has done something in his tuning past pretty right, and no one is perfect.

---- happens...end of story.

Re: How to empty your wallet?, Have the dumb ass at Pina Motorsports tune your c

Are you the guy that got 243whp, and said you needed to make 250whp?

That dyno reads way low. @ 243whp you were making more like 293whp. I made 330whp and traped 117mph in the 1/4mile ...compare that to other cars and their Dyno Jet sheets say anything from 388whp to 410whp. Dyno Dynamic reads very conservatively.

IMO 22psi on a small 16g and pump gas is pushing it already pushing limits, and you said at that boost it even spiked to 26psi! Yikes! ....I personaly would never run that much if I was worried about saving my engine. Do you even know how much boost it was making when it blew-up? It could have been 26psi with a 30 spike! ..thats crazy!

ratcityrex .....How do you know it only made 20hp more over your tune??? ....did you guys dyno the car before? Did you guys dyno the car on a Dyno Dynamic before? I doubt you did either, but if you are atleast saying the car was dynoed before and made 223whp, and later made 243whp on the Dyno Dynamics ....then already there is a Big difference in HP ...like I say above; Dyno Dynamics reads very conservative so that 243whp is more like 293whp on a DynoJet.

I understand you are upset guys, but bashing isnt the way to go ....If you are trying to milk every last little bit of HP out of a motor/set-up ....Its only natural that something is going to fail. You cant say I want MAX HP, and MAX reliability ...that just doesnt work. You either get one or the other.

Solution:

1. Put dsm back together and sell for ridiculous price.

2. Build Sirius based motor, drop into mirage/colt/summit.

3. Rule the streets with an Iron fist and 2000lb curb weigh.

4. Enjoy.

Well I think when the rod/piston broke, it blew the balance shaft right out the side of the block.
