How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

I want to play music and if possible video(teh pr0n) from my computer to my TV. How do I connect them? ??? My computer has an "S-video" plug on the back and my DVD player has an "S-video" plug on the back, but will that transfer video and audio? The one on the back of the DVD says "Output" though so I'm not sure if that would work? ??? My receiver has 3 "S-video" plugs, one for "DVD in", one for "monitor out", and one for "video2 in".

Receiver? Like a control box/RF Modulator?

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

you could connect the s video on your computer and the s video on your reciever for video. but you have to have your tv run through your receiver. for sound you could use the headphone jack and get an adapter to turn it into the av red and white plug to plug into the reciever

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

yeah the S-video is strictly video transfer. Also make sure the S-video is vid out on your computer. Mine is only for video capture.

The cable is like $2 at any radioshack or walmart.

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

The S-Video only transfers the video signal, you will need other wires for audio. I don't understand why you are trying to connect your computer to your dvd player? You can't with the S-Video, because it's output on both the dvd player and your computer. You need to hook your computer directly to your tv. If you tv isn't a nice new one it probably doesn't have an s-video on it, and you will need a little adapter that costs less than $5 to convert the s-video cable coming from your computer to the composite signal (RCA cable). Then you gotta get an adapter for your audio at radio shack or similar place, it will have a headphone jack on one end that plugs into your computer's audio output and on the other end it will have the 2 RCAs, left and right speaker hookups that plug into your tv.

How do I run the TV through the receiver? ??? The TV runs through the VCR/DVD and then to the receiver so I would think as long as I could feed video/audio either the receiver or the DVD/VCR it would work, right?

I thought about the headphone jack thing, but I figured there was an easier "high-tech" computer cable that I could use instead.....plus I want the video too.

That will convert the headphone jack to RCA's

does your tv have s video?

HMTguy 04-10-2005 02:03 PM

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

You're still gonna need separate cables for audio and video, there is no high-tech computer cable you speak of. Your dvd player doesn't have any inputs, so you can't run audio/video through there. You can run the audio through your receiver which will then go to your tv, but you still need to hook up the video somewhere. Since your receiver is only for audio and has no video inputs, you need to hook your video signal directly to your tv. Either with the s-video cable if your tv has a s-video input or with the s-video cable and the adapter I mentioned.

I want to play music from my computer on my stereo so I don't have to burn 3 million CD's to listen to my music on a decent stereo.

My TV is kinda old and doesn't have an S-video plug. :(

So I need an 'S-video to a single RCA' adapter for the video and a 'headphone to dual RCA' adapter for the audio? That's gay.....

He said his reciever had video inputs & outputs, so i was thinking it would be easier because you could do s video into the reciever, and av out to the tv. and you could still keep everything connected to the tv if the reciever has options for different sources

Actually, the DVD has all kinds of inputs, video and audio) and the receiver has several video inputs. ???

You got it that's all you're gonna need. They aren't too expensive though, less than $5 each.

it has video inputs for different sources, basically so you dont have to keep unplugging the av cables on your tv to use different things, you can just press a button on the reciever to change it

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

Ok it looks like you probably don't need that s-video adapter. Plug the s-video on your computer to your "dvd in" on the back of the receiver. I can't see very well, but if one of those composite video jacks on the back of the receiver is an output, plug that in your tv and you're good to go.

and then use the headphone to av audio adapter and plug it into the dvd audio input

The TV doesn't have ----. It has a coax cable input and a power cord. :P

Does that mean this isn't possible, or I just need the S-video to RCA adapter and plug that into the VCR/DVD, right?

how do you have your dvd player and vcr hooked up to your tv?

Through the regular coax/tv cable. I can play TV sound through the receiver so I figure if I can just get the inputs into the VCR/DVD that'll work.

$50 later I got the audio hooked up, but nobody has an S-video-RCA connector. :-\ That's all I need now.

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

ok justin.. i imagine you are more of a visual learner.. so lets see what we can do for ya...

1. the receiver is and audio/video receiver meaning that it can switch sources of audio and video signals.

method of connection...
- connect MONITOR out to a Video input on your TV. (svid / rca doesnt matter)
- connect the s-video on your dvd to the s-video on your receiver meant for DVD.
- connect the s-video on your pc to a video input on your receiver.. say video 1 for example.

now on your reciever you simple press DVD and the receiver will switch the source for video to your DVD and ouput it to "monitor".
press video 1 and it switches the source to the pc and outputs it to "monitor"

it will do the same thing with audio. now... depending on your pc, you might have a composite digital out port on the i/o panel (where the kb and mouse connects). if you have a single RCA plug there than that is digital out. simply connect that to video1-digital in. if not. do the MIC -> 2 rca plugs as mentioned, but attach it to video 1 audio inputs (the red/white plugs).

basically EVERYTHING goes to the receiver and it will switch to the desired (selected) source and output it.

I didnt read ANYTHING else in this thread...but,

Get a TIVO...you can run a TiVo server on your desktop and through your network run any music and display any photos you have on your comp thru your TiVo.

That and the TiVo is the best mother ------- invention EVAR! O0

It's strange because I was always the one who figured out how to set the clock and figure electrical gizmos out, but computers are beyond me. :-[

Re: How do I connect my computer to my stereo?

you want to play music and pr0n through your tv from your computer...

just burn it to a damned cd or dvd and not mess with all the wires, as simple as those are regardless...jeebus

comp output -> dvd (or receiver) input
dvd (or receiver) output ->tv

wa la

if you have svid connectors, buy svid connector cables, if not, radioshack has conversion cables in 5 and 10 foot lengths, make sure to split it off from teh svid from the comp before you hit up the dvd player, or receiver if thats what you are running your dvd through
