Depends on the hand drill. I've used a bunch of hand operated drill presses that kick the delta press I boughts *** b/c there is less tolerance in the drill head, if you can believe that. My grandfather use to rebuild hand drill presses & lathes as a hobby.
More teeth = better metal cut
More teeth = smoother wood cut & better for cross-grain cutting
Fewer teeth = good for ripping wood
Hole saws are quick, drill bits are better & stepped drill bits are awesome for medium sized holes, but expencive & can be annoying to use.
Anything you can buy at a lowes/homedepot is gonna be pretty low quality in a relative world. The key word there is relative.

I once used a wood bit on a pipe and the bit last about half way through, than i got a bi-metal hole saw bit and about 20 pipes later it still works like a top. Get the right tool for the right job in this case.
