Is it just me or does it seem really strange how this device can do all that when it's just plugged into your cigarette lighter slot??? ::)

its all because it has an accelerometer inside it so it measures the G forces put on it (it knows how much change in Gs there must be over a specific period of time to accelerate it (and the car) to 60 mph etc. It gets really screwy if you use it and you didnt drive perfectly straight or if it wasnt used on level roads, or if its not pointing straight and stuff
