did timing belt, spun rod bearing

anyone ever had anything like this happen? I did a timing belt on a friends dad's del sol. It's about the 25th D-series timing belt I've done, knocked it out in just under 2 hours. Started it up and almost instatly started knocking. I pulled apart the bottom end with the engine in the car, #1 rod bearing was spun. Any idea's how it could have happened? Ran perfect before the belt, 120k on it, timing belt is dead on.

:-\ ive bever heard a rod bearing immediatly knocking, even if theirs no oil pressure. usualy takes it alittle to be audiable.

Rod bearings = no oil pressure. Oil pump is driven off the crankshaft. Timing belt drives the camshaft and water pump - nothing to do with oil pressure.

Let me guess, 96+ Del Slo with the junk ass D16Y oil pump?

Re: did timing belt, spun rod bearing

well, I had a set of Y-series bearings laying around, amazingly one of them plasti-gauged w/in spec, so I replaced the #1 rod bearing. Started it up, and it was quiet for about 30 seconds then it started knocking again. The rod looked fine, and the journal looked fine.

The old bearing is ground down on the cap side, and the rod side has a dimple about 1mm in diameter right in the middle of the journal surface.

The car was fine before, I drove it from his house to my house. He hasn't even seen the car since I left, so yeah...wtf do I do now? I figure I'll offer to install an engine for free, but I only have a couple OBD0 engines around, nothing with the knock sensor stuff he will need.

Oh, and yeah, it's a 96 Del Sol w/ the shitty Y-series oil pump.

um knock can be relocated to many areas of the engine to keep it happy
