Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

I got my A+ when i was in high school also, wish i would of gone and gotten MCSE, the A+ wasn't worth it. The other suggestions in the thread or a college/university degree is a much better bet at getting a job...

A+ is a cake walk. If you are bored go get it, but go get something more substatintal. The biggest thing in the technology field starts with experience. Next comes certs. Education helps but I have beat many college educated people out of jobs because of experience and certafications. MCSE 2003 is a pretty good cert. A+ is not part of it. Figure out what route you really want to take. If you like networks and math, go check out cisco certs. Redhat certs are pretty valuable too. The new certs for MS if you are going that route are MCITP now. They are doing away with the MCSE. The replacment is MCITPEA.

DOnt bother goiung out of your way to get one... Its rudamentary ---- to get you a bottom of the barrel IT support job for the most part assuming you have no experience...

BUT if youre looking to get in and start pushing for better positions, it WONT hurt, and is pretty much a cakewalk. My 13 year old nephew could pass the cert.

Just get it if you can. But dont count on it getting you anywhere microsoft or cisco certs are where its at but without a degree its still hard as ---- to get your foot in the door.

+1. If you have no other experience its a easy way to start.

A+ is great...if you want to work at Fry's Electronics or be in the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

If you want any kind of decent computer related career, get a bachelors and start workin on MS and Cisco certs.

Like telling a random dude to get a cisco cert is like telling a guy to get like a specific Aluminum cert for welding if they wanna work on cars. Cisco is such a hard specialized test there are like 8 other ways that would be Easier, cheaper and more efficent to get your foot in the door. Cisco is for eth dude who already networks or admin but wants to actually start doing sometihng with difficulty. Windows admin work is rather easy so MCSE or A isnt bad but still its 4 - 7 tests so...in comparision the A+ will get you a second interview for less dollars and time.

So if you have NOTHING the a+ aint too bad but really its nothing special at all. I got a 2 year degree though and was looking at jobs right when i graduated so it took me a bit to go get teh a_ afterwards. as soon as I had my CompTia number i got a job offer 2 bucks more than the others so ever little bit helps
