calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

---- the economy, just found out I'm getting laid off. The bad news is my job is very specific and I probably wont find a job in my field with all this ------- depression ---- going on. Anyway I am pretty nerdy and think i can pass the A+ certification test if i brush up on my computer skillz, my question is, is it worth it? the test seems pretty easy if u've been around computes all ur life....

Just go to the local truck stop. Still plenty of lonely truckers on the road.

A+ is a joke. anyone with a computer degree will laugh at you...

do yourself a favor, and go back to school. learn computers there. Certifications aren't everything if you have no education.

If you Have to get certified, get the RH033 cert, and othe rRH certs,

ccna and ccne are at the top of the list.

are you good at math?

qft I got my A+ in high school. Basically the only thing in that class that required any thought was binary to hex conversions.

not really.

its simple as ----. A+ is only good if you plan on being a computer fixing peon.

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

A+ is only a requirement to get jobs like working at Circuit City.

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

AFAIK A+ has changed somewhere from 2002-2004, and its a lot more in depth than it ever was before. And who cares if its so easy to get - if thats true it should be on your resume

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

A+ is good if you want a job at geek squad.

The reason its not a big deal is because anyone can spend a few days cramming and pass it ( i got mine in 2005 because it was required by my former job) but i don't think any of our desktop techs here have that ----, I mean you don't need to know which IRQ is for the floppy drive and what voltages every color wire in your power supply is anymore, you need to know how to reimage, replace peripherals and troubleshoot Microsoft applications.

like Kain said, if you want a valuable certification, get MCSE ( of which i believe A+ is required, lol) or CCNA/CCNP. You can't bullshit your way through cisco exams, you either know it or you don't.

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

A+ is only an entry certification. Just like Kain said, rhct , rhce, ccna, ccne will be something to really consider.

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

I got my A+ when i was in high school also, wish i would of gone and gotten MCSE, the A+ wasn't worth it. The other suggestions in the thread or a college/university degree is a much better bet at getting a job...

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

A+ is a cake walk. If you are bored go get it, but go get something more substatintal. The biggest thing in the technology field starts with experience. Next comes certs. Education helps but I have beat many college educated people out of jobs because of experience and certafications. MCSE 2003 is a pretty good cert. A+ is not part of it. Figure out what route you really want to take. If you like networks and math, go check out cisco certs. Redhat certs are pretty valuable too. The new certs for MS if you are going that route are MCITP now. They are doing away with the MCSE. The replacment is MCITPEA.

DOnt bother goiung out of your way to get one... Its rudamentary ---- to get you a bottom of the barrel IT support job for the most part assuming you have no experience...

BUT if youre looking to get in and start pushing for better positions, it WONT hurt, and is pretty much a cakewalk. My 13 year old nephew could pass the cert.

Re: calling all nerds A+ certification worth it?

Just get it if you can. But dont count on it getting you anywhere microsoft or cisco certs are where its at but without a degree its still hard as ---- to get your foot in the door.

+1. If you have no other experience its a easy way to start.

A+ is great...if you want to work at Fry's Electronics or be in the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

If you want any kind of decent computer related career, get a bachelors and start workin on MS and Cisco certs.

Like telling a random dude to get a cisco cert is like telling a guy to get like a specific Aluminum cert for welding if they wanna work on cars. Cisco is such a hard specialized test there are like 8 other ways that would be Easier, cheaper and more efficent to get your foot in the door. Cisco is for eth dude who already networks or admin but wants to actually start doing sometihng with difficulty. Windows admin work is rather easy so MCSE or A isnt bad but still its 4 - 7 tests so...in comparision the A+ will get you a second interview for less dollars and time.

So if you have NOTHING the a+ aint too bad but really its nothing special at all. I got a 2 year degree though and was looking at jobs right when i graduated so it took me a bit to go get teh a_ afterwards. as soon as I had my CompTia number i got a job offer 2 bucks more than the others so ever little bit helps

I have to agree with that ----. My sister obtained several computer certifications during 2 or 3 years at tech school....her last job was working at a ------' video game store. I know it doesn't pertain to everyone, but I think alot of ppl keep going back to school for different ---- 'cause they simply don't wanna go out and get a REAL job...

companies want experience more than anything, for some reason people think that because you run out and get your ccna/ccnp/solaris/novell or whatever the ---- certification that your suddenly going to land a job making 80k a year. If you don't have experience in that field your best bet is to get your foot in the door with a company and work your way into that ----, I started as an african ---- ass contractor 3 years ago for Sprint's helpdesk and after the first of the year will be moving to the Active Directory/Exchange team, which is a nice step up the ladder. Should have taken programming classes instead......... ::)

Some places don't care what you look like if you can get the job done. She needs to look for a real job.

AND THAT is also alot of her problem, she's systematically lazy and hasn't exactly ever experienced the rigors of a REAL JOB. I was MADE to work when I was coming up, and therefore had money to splurge on booze and recreational drugs. My sister wasn't exactly shoved into the workforce(I don't think my mother could handle TWO children that LIVED to party), and has never even seen the back of a patrol car, but she's also LAZY and doesn't contribute much to society...

LOL...My sister lives with a woman(not much older than her) that she met on the internet 5 or 6 years ago. The woman is married and has a daughter, and they all live with her Mom...My sister has been a video game and internet extravert since she was 11 or 12 years old. If there are other females like my sister, I don't know of any. She is truly one of a kind.
