in no way am i accusing you of being retarded i dont know why you think this.

i have nothing but respect for you and your decisions and value your opinion just as much as all the other military personnel i have consulted on this issue.

im joining because i really always wanted to.

i wanted to be a Marine since i was like 5 years old, when i was in high school i tried to enlist but the school that i had just transferred to wasnt accepted by the Marines. everyone else accepted it but i had no interest in the other branches, and i did not want to change schools again when my grades were finally doing well.

so i decided i would try school and try and inherit my dads company.

and now, with 2 half semesters of college and 4 years experience working construction and numerous other second jobs. i was laid off and had to reevaluate my situation.

it took me 2 months of thinking, and being told by everyone i knew that was in the military not to join, that i decided it was something i really wanted to do. in my opinion, war is something that you can only experience and learn in the military. and if that sounds dumb or crazy to you thats fine, everyone has told me the same thing.

that just how i am, i want to live in a bunker, i love guns more than turbos, and have always wanted to be in combat.

i dont know if i will like combat as i have never experienced it, i dont know if i will like the marines as i have never been in it.

but the only way to know these things is to do it, i may turn out to be a little pacifistic bitch after seeing my first casualty. ( i seriously doubt this will happen) but the only way to know for sure is to do it. i may get into the Marines and realize that it was the worst decision of my entire life and i hate being told what to do and how to do it. (i seriously doubt this as well)

but i will only know if i do it.

and the reason i want infantry. i have never heard of anyone ever lateral moving to infantry from a technical *** job because that just doesnt make sense. but i have heard of numerous people who have moved from infantry to a technical *** job, because thats how things go.

you dont move down after being trained in something advanced, you move up and learn a more advanced skill.

the reality is you can explain all the benefits of going into a more technical position, all the disadvantages of being a grunt, you can type this out till your fingers fall off and call and explain it to me till you talk like a throat cancer victim.

i want to go infantry, nothing else. if i get into the marines with my 03xx contract and they try and move me well, i will have to deal with it then but im leaving with an active duty 03xx contract. if i have to wait till april to do so then i will.

never worked with retards, but i have worked with a guy that didnt graduate 8th grade.

and he knew more about drilling water wells than the engineer that went to college for 6 years.

and i in fact did trust my life with him.

and i dont believe i have ever seen a mentally retarded marine.

so what exactly is your point aside from the fact that you can change qoutes.

You can call if you want but I have no problems typing either. I just poured a tasty thick Porter and ate a great dinner.

Ok, so let me spill it out to you. As for the 03 field, your not gonna get it. I'm telling you, get it out of your head. Your way to smart. You went and took the asvab, scored great on it, and your over qualified for the job. That would be like the guy who graduates college with a masters and gets a job at Mc Donalds as the fry boy. Honestly. The Marine Corps isnt gonna take a guy with your smarts and make you an 03. Just how it is. Your too over qualified.

So onto the combat thing. Right now, there is no combat going on. Sure, we have Iraq, and sure your *** will probably be there at the late months of 2009 beginning of 2010, but the reality is, there is no combat going on there...at least not like when I went through 6 years ago. You get a few shots every once in a while but its for sure not combat. More Marines died on motorcycles in the US last year than in Iraq in the last year. Crazy Huh? Oh yeah, as I was saying, you'd go over, like everyone else and sit on al-asad, do a 12 hour shift and then go back to your room and chill out for 12 hours. Iraq is the next Okinawa. We went through, blew the place up and now wanna be friends with them, keep them stable and protect them. Thats Okinawa for you. Look back to WWII.

Guns, sure. They are fun to fire. They are fun to ---- with. Realistically, unless you DO by some crazy chance become an 03, you wont fire ---- except an M16 once a year on the range. On the flip side, in the past few years they have changed it a bit and its a ------- blast to go to the range now, if you do enjoy shooting. However, getting up at 2am to go fire on the range when the sun comes up, staying there until 6pm until the last sting fires and then trying to stay focused cause that range score matters weather or not you get promoted can lead to a very stressful week.

You want to live in a bunker, your not. Forget about that. Thats the paper pamflet/video Marine that the recruiter showed you. Trench fighting is a thing of the past. You are gonna live in a room about the size of your typical dorm room that your gonna be pissed off about cleaning to the ------- T every god dam week. People are in your ---- all of the ------- time and life sucks for the first...oh, id say year in the fleet. When/if you do ever see combat, your gonna sleep wheerver the ---- you can sleep. Humvee's, 7 tons, whatever you can lay your head on is where you will sleep.

lat moving isnt gonna happen until you re-enlist or they close your MOS (job). Don't think your gonna enlist, go to boot camp, then MOS school and go to the fleet for a year or two, get sick of the job and change jobs. That wont happen, hope you don't think it will.

So, how can I help you, you might ask. So you wanna be a grunt so ------- bad. I would suggest going into the comm field. Go be a radio operator. Ever seen grunts with no comm? No. Ever see tanks with no comm? No. Ever see LAR with no comm? No. Ever see recon with no Comm? No. See where im going with this? Your not going to be a 03, but being a 0621 (like I am) field radio operator, your CHANCES of being with the grunts and supporting them are very likely. With your asvab score, they would put you into the 06 field in a heart beat. When your duty station preferences come along, tell them Lejeune or Pendelton or even 29 Palms. Those places all have the grunts/tanks/recon/ANGLICO/etc. etc. units.

So, lets look at the other side of things. Why am I getting out? I am a Sergeant, im sitting in a nice house with nice things. Have 2 nice cars sitting in my driveway and a garage with nice tools in it. Why leave this life? Id be an idiot, right? Well, let me tell you the real side of things.
The health care absolutely ------- sucks. It does. Going a year of running 5 days a week, complaining about a knee only to later find out I have a very fucked up knee and all of the sudden they wanna operate on the bitch sucks. Going to the Emergency room and they telling you they are going to breakfast, go somewhere else...yeah. (of course I raised hell but still) Thats your free medical. You see the ---- that makes the news with the ---- service members go through, seems awful, huh? Guess what...its life. Deploying, sure I have no problem doing it. I signed up, and I will go where ever, when ever. Leaving my wife and now I have a little one, by themselves for 6-7 months, im not down for that. I have a great family in Indiana who waits for us to get out, they cant even stand it. The pay...the pay sucks. You will work from about 430- to say 530-6 every night. and you will get the shittiest pay ever. Ok, you get the chowhall (as a single Marine) to go eat at every night. I ate there 2 meals a day, and man does that ---- suck. But hey, I guess its a benifit...and you MUST pay for it, so why not...right? Ever been held accountable for some ---- you had absolutely nothing to do with? Your about to be. Man, I could go on and on, but really...I dont want to. We would need more beer and I dont have many more to drink, sadly enough.

What I will tell you is good on you for wanting to become apart of the greatest gun club ever. The Corps has been great to me and my wife, I just don't wanna deal with this bullshit anymore. I just want to tell you the truth about things. -and get it out of your head about the 03 thing.

Steve. Really, never tell anyone you scored a 69 on the asvab. Thats horrible man. I really hope you aren't serious. If it is true, Capt Hess kicked your *** out because you were worthless even to the Air Force. Thats sad.

I went and got another beer. A Samuel Smith oatmeal stout. Slammin beer!

Anyways, lets talk in the open. Someone else might have some of the same thoughts you do, or interested in the military.

in regards to the bunker comment, i meant that is what i want to buy to live in.
not to live in in the marines.
and while i would totally be a field radio operator. what are the chances that i will get that.
if i get an active duty contract for the 06xx field, there are 21 jobs that i can get stuck with and 0621 is just one of them.
so say i do go for an 06 and the marines decides that they need me to be a rear echelon job that requires someone with an EL score of 110 or higher.
bam, im sitting back on a base ------- with radios while the field guys go out.
now if i go in with an 03xx contract, there are 14 jobs that i could get stuck with, none of which would put me anywhere near a rear echelon base.
so even if by some wack *** chance i get stuck with 0341 mortarman. i would still be in a weapons platoon near the front.
and from what i was told by my recruiter there is a larger chance of me going to afganistan than iraq at this point in time because of the exact reason you stated.
iraq is done an blown over while afganistan is still blowing up.
I really am lost with the bunker thing. No clue what you are talking about.

Lets go back to the 03 thing. Dude, your too frickin smart for it. You probably have better chances of getting struck by lightening than becoming anything 03. Steve would have made a great 03, hes ------- retarded. He might be book smart, might be able to talk ---- on the internet, make an oil line or paint a house, but anything else that might require some brains and actually applying himself, he would fail horribly at.

So lets think about other jobs that could get you close to those front lines that you wanna be so close to.
Comm is probably your best bet. Be an operator and not a tech. Tank mech's is something you should seriously think about. What else interests you?

So another war. America is so far in debt to everything and everyone, no way in hell could we prepare to invade for another full blown war like we would have to attack Iran or Korea or any of those other nut case places. Afghanistan, trust me when I say, thats already planned and going to happen. The who what when where and how about everything is ready to roll. I really don't think that is going to last long. Hopefully your new commander in chief can man up to the task at hand.

ZC, cool you posted my response, so no need to send it back to me.

ZC, comms is a legitimate idea for what i am looking for.

i didnt make mention of it but that UZ contract stipulates that i will have the option to try out for Recon.

this is a dream of mine, which is probally shared by everyone in the infantry that dosent dream of going to scout sniper school.

as a field radio operator i can still try out for recon as they have a need for radiomen and i may even have a better chance of getting in as i would be trained in a smaller field than all the 03s that try out.

but the problem still lies in the fact that i would have to get the job of an 0621.

now not to drag personal things into this but how did you get this job?

im assuming that you signed a contract just for the 06 field, did you pick to be an 0621 or were you picked?

why were you not selected for another position?

what, if you do not mind me asking, was you EL score when you enlisted?

this having to pick a general field thing is the main reason that i am going 03, if i could pick a specific field there are numerous other jobs i would like, but i cannot pick a specific one and do not want to risk landing some other job.
