Bank gave me $2500 UPDATE

Ok, so I rollz up in da bank today with a wad of cash from some tv sales yesterday. I gave them $1600 to deposit. I asked for my balance thinking it would only be about $1650 at the most, since most of my money is tied up in paypal and "products." Instead, the statement said $4097. WTF? Stupidly, I told the teller that it didn't look right. She told me I deposited $2500 on the 15th (which I didn't). Then I says to her, "oooh yeahhh ok, well that sounds right, I'm going back to work." The guy next to her asked her to print out the screen for him, so I figured they were gonna figure out what was going on.

Well, I just checked it again (about 8 hours after I found out) and the money is still there. Everyone has told me that the bank will eventually catch it and want it's money back. I was considering withdrawing it all tomorrow (I don't like the bank) and possibly closing the account. If I do this, could they do anything legally? Or just send me annoying letters asking for the money back? Anyone ever got a bonus from the bank that they didn't take back?

Picking up the CRX tomorrow

ya good luck with trying to spend that money its the banks they will find it. Accounting errors arent a lotto. Your will basically ---- yourself if you try to spend it

My dad did something similar with his gi bill. He just kept using it and went well over what it was suppose to be. About a year later guess who comes knocking uncle sam asking for his money.

Re: Bank gave me $2500

Yeah, I figured they'll probably get it back one way or another. As soon as paypal quits being a dick and lets me transfer $5k I'll have the money back, so I guess I'll just use it as a "loan."

Re: Bank gave me $2500

If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. They'll post a negative balance in the account. I used my debit card to order a set of wheels. Got the wheels, they were damaged and put a dispute in with the bank, thinking it was like amex. Anyway a week goes by and i moved with another bank (for other complications with BoA) and transfered all the money. The next month i get a letter saying that i have a negative balance in the closed account..... Still jewing them down because that was completely there fault... Owed them 1100, they're ready to settle for 740. This was last summer by the way.
Moral of the story banks screw up too and they're gonna wonder where the money is, if it's not at the end of the month it'll be at the end of their next fiscal quater. Don't spend it.

The bank will find out. It doesn't matter if you withdraw it now or never, you will be out that $2500.

Re: Bank gave me $2500

I had that happen one time, but it was only because I pushed the 0 button a couple times too many on the deposit. Like a jackass I pulled all that ---- out, and then they sent me a letter that said "YOUR FINGERS ARE TOO FAT, GIVE US THE LOOT, NIGGA".

In the case of the bank ------- up, I'd still cash the ---- out of the account and sit on it. I haven't heard of any banks forgetting about where their money went, but anything *could* happen. The ball won't be in your court though until you go drown that account.

Yeah, I'm just going to use it as a loan.

I have a bit more money than what's in the account, it's just invested in other things or tied up with homo------- paypal. They'll get it back, but at 0% interest rate I have to take the chance :P

So, who thinks I can run with the money if I close the account? I know they got my social but I'm moving soon so they won't be able to notify my, and I don't have to answer their calls. I hate that bank, they've fucked me over a few times...

I went through the kinda the same thing last year. Expect the my bank account show i had -58dollar's, when i really had 300 in there i went up there a raised hell with them and they said there's nothing they can do. So i closed my account i still had my debit card so like a week later i went to the atm just to see if it would work i checked my balance it showed i had 1100 dollars. The next day i went to the bank to see if they would give me my money i just wanted the $300. I told them i closed my account last week, but she said it was still open with $1100 in it. So she gave me the cash and closed the account. It's been a year and ive heard nothing about it :y

I got an extra $20 out once from an ATM, I asked for $20, and I got $40. Ive never paid that $20 back...but every dam time I go to the ATM, I always hope for the best. :P

Anyways, I wouldnt believe that money. Also, remeber that the online system updates itself every 24hrs. SO there could be a chance that it still shows that, but the system isnt updated. I wouldnt touch it...now if it sits there for a few weeks...------ withdraw that ----.

When I worked Circle K...

I'd always eye the ATM in the back of the store on friday and saturday night.

I must have picked up at least $2-300 over the course of a couple years people not grabbing all their money.

Re: Bank gave me $2500

I would just go in and ask them to look into it. I would want the error corrected because they will correct it some time. If they are 100% sure that it is all good then have them give you a written statement attesting that the deposit was not an error. Then and only then would I even touch it.

I believe there is a sytem to where if/when you try to open another bank account they will see this in the records and deny you service. I'm sure when the bank realizes the error(and they will)they will turn the account into a negative/deliqu/past due balance and try to collect. I wouldn't risk it. :l

Yeah I see your point...I'm not sure if there's a system in place to check your other accounts though. I owed one bank $500 so went to this bank and opened an account, had no problem at all. I withdrew the money today, tomorrow I'll close it. If they ask for their money, i'll give it back...if they don't, i'll keep it.

Re: Bank gave me $2500

I used to work at a bank... once they figure out the mistake (it will happen sooner or later), they will:

a) Go after you using their loss prevention department (collections)

b) Get it legally by using a legal hold with your new bank.

Either way, it's best not to spend it.

Kenny is 100% dead on. When the banks finds the money gone, they will simply take the money out of any account you have there, or they will take it back leagally via dept collection / court time. And unlike private parties. Banks have the money to ---- you up without thinking about it.

Don't spend it... It's actually illegal in the US. Just like if you were to deposite a fake check.

And banks are fucktards. Credit Unions kick the living piss out of banks.
Especially when it comes time to getting any kind of big low interst loans... They'll give you alot of lee-way. Not so with a bank.

Banks have the power to ---- you financial life up. Your credit can/will be affected if you have an amount due in collections. It doesn't matter if you take that cash and burn it, bury it, or whatver. The fact is they can see they made a deposit by mistake and then you close your account really soon afterward... That's not suspicious...

The bank will either
a) put you into their own collection and/or put a hold on any new account you open (at any financial insitution that is in reach of US law)
b) take you to court and absolutely destroy you. The arguement that "hey, they put it MY account, that's not my fault" is definitely not a legal arguement.

BTW, I don't mean to sound like a dick or anything, I'm just saying that so you know what can happen.

yeah bro. your not gonna like the other end of the stick when this ---- hits the fan. Its not like they are gonna call you up and say 'hey, I was just thinking, there was a mistake, and you have an estra $2000 of our money. When you get a chance, can you bring that by our place, k thanks bye'.

you'll get a letter saying you have x amount of days to repay it (and it will be like 5 working days), you wont have the money, and then you will get another letter saying you need to go to court because your ass is being sued. I wouldnt have touched it. At least give it a month or so before you touched it.

Now, had a month or so gone on, and nothing happened to it...fair ------- game.

True story to a friend of my uncles:
Guy stops to help someone else who was broke down along side the road...its like 5 degreese outside, fix's the guys car, tells him he doesn't want a payment...just to have a nice day. Its a small town in Montana...guy goes back to his car, finds a peice of mail missing, the envelope is there....inside the envelope is a few hundred bucks. The next day, the bank calls and says he needs to come in right away. Guy goes into his bank and finds out his house and his car(s) are paid for...and theres $5000 extra in his account. Turns out that guy that was broke down along the road was a billionare and wanted to help the stranger out who helped him. Karma. It can go either way. 100% true story by the way...

lol, same here. That's cool as ---- though. Karma is cool and all....but I've been pretty damn nice and nobody has given me ---- in my life. :7 :3

I think I want to change my mind about my previous post on the situation. I found out this morning that my bank charged me $114 in NSF fees for "bouncing" 3 credit card transactions. I have overdraft protection and there is money in my savings so they shouldn't have fucked me over like that. I'm going down tomorrow to bitch and probably close my accounts. $38 per NSF is ridiculous itself, but I shouldn't even have been charged that ---- because the money should have came out of my savings. :7

I had about 300-400 left in the account, and today I tried to use my debit card at a gas station. "Auth Failed"

----

Went to another, it asked for my pin so thought everything was ok...

"Transaction Denied"

So...guess I'll have to wait and see how this goes :) If paypal would hurry the ---- up with my money I'd be alright.
