I hear you guys. Shop work is a bitch and gets old fast. That's why I want to get a degree in the field so I'm not grunt doing all the work and/or starting from the bottom. I'd probably like doing engine overhauls and more "technical" stuff though.

well being a backyard mechanic wont be enough info to start out doing overhauls. i thought i new a decent amount about mechanics and man ive learned more in the past year than i would ever think there is to learn. oh yea, your toolbox will be your biggest investment.

I know this thread is a little old now but im not on here much anymore, but anyway, its funny you say this because i never went to automotive school and I was able to become a tech with experience. Funny thing is, we get people all the time from wyotech and DADC two of the better automotive schools, and they always start out at like $9/hr. as oil change bitches and you wont move up for 1-2 years, in this industry there is simply no replacement for on the job experience, not even school, I laugh at most of the guys who come from these schools because they dont know ---- about ----.....

Those auto tech schools are a joke. I personally wouldn't think of attending a school that I see infomercials and commercials on TV for. I'm going for a bachelor's degree anyways so maybe I won't necessarily be doing tech work. maybe managment, or something else. Who knows!

there is skills usa. which is a series of skills given to students from different schools regarding mechanics. the school i go to has beatan wyotech and nadc several times. i would suggest looking into schooling in madison for diesel. and btw, we hired a guy who graduated from nadc. he didnt even know how to drive a standard transmission vehicle.

haha yeah, i had a group of friend get sucked into the uti trap in houston while we were in high school. they loved working on their own cars, and decided to go to uti. 5 origianally went, 1 got in a car wreck and got his *** kicked by the guy he hit (same dude who fucked my last girlfriend, the one about the butsex thread) so he ended up dropping out, 3 got there cars broken into the first week of living there. about 3 month into it, another got t-boned by a semi truck and got fucked up really bad and ended up leaving school. another two just couldnt cut it and dropped out. the one that actually finished had to double faze his classes and now he is 27 grand into the hole (just from school), had a 06 chevy and an 06 cbr1000rr reposessed and is currently working a minimun wage job as shop bitch for the oil changers as a favor from a family friend. And another friend from a seperate group of friends went to uti and then to hollywood for volkswagons extended course and is now level 2 tech with 4 months on the job training making double what i make a year already. I guess its hit or miss with that, but i sure aint going for it.
