Re: Automotive major?

I've kinda been eye-balling New England Institute of Technology. They have associates and bachelors in auto technology. They have mechanical Eng Tech, Information Technology, and Computer Networking majors also, which are all paths I've considered/currently working on.

Their automotive facility looks pretty nice:

If my school, or one around here, offered auto tech, I would have chosen that as my major. But none do and Eng Tech is the next best thing. I wouldn't mind making some logs for you nogs in a few years =P.

I have a dumb question for you... How does your grade works in US?

Here it's:

- 6 years elementary school
- 5 years secondary school
- 2 years cegep (pre-university) or 3 years (technician)
- 4 years in engineering (3 otherwise) bac.
- 2 years "maitrise" I searched, but didn't find the translation
- 3 years doctoral

I just want to understand when I read posts that people talk about school...

Btw, I did all those math and it sucks! :y

I have been an automotive tech for 5 years, (partially managing a quick lube shop and now i'm a general line tech at a gm dealer) and im also a second year college student, engineering major, probably going with structural engineering. Honestly man from my experience being a tech sucks ass, i started because i loved working on cars, and i still do but at work its completely different, your not doing anything cool most of it is bullshit and when you only flag like 10 hours on a winter week it sucks balls, shops and techs are negative people and the industry sucks although if your a good heavy line or drivability tech (like 10 years experienced) you can make good money, but i will be so happy the day i finish school and never have to turn a wrench for a living again.....my 02 on it....

I have a Automotive Technology AAS Degree and now I'm in Mechanical Engineering Technology at the University of Cincinnati. I enjoyed the Automotive degree I learned quite a bit but I wanted more so I continued on with the MET. Go to school just its easier to get a job. Right now I co-op for Dana Corporation in Toledo rebuilding and testing alxes and driveshafts its quite a blast and pays pretty good. Best of luck.

agreed..kinda. shop expierience is different than most think. kind of like a fish tank. you start out as a botom feeder getting ---- on. as you gain more knowledge (school and expirience) you become a young tech. doing whatever work is there and learning from it. after about 8-10 years you become a pirhana. do more electrical/overhauls/really technical stuff. which really involves less physical work and more critical thinking. overall i love working in a shop. I get paid to learn, fix/work on/drive vehicles most people dont and ---- around in between jobs and on down time. but from what ive heard from other techs at the shop, is that automotive field is way underpaid.

Re: Automotive major?

^^^^ Yes.

I really don't care about pay. As long as I can pay for my housing (at least a mortgage once I graduate) and bills, and have a few bucks left over for myself and a car or two, I'm happy. Of course, more is better but I'm not trying to be a millionaire.
