People would be alright if they didn't abuse substances, the fact that most people use drugs as a means to escape reality is sad. This is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it, trying to make up for something in your personal psyche that is lacking with a substance that makes you feel "good". I used to see that ---- all the time in Miami, the addicts stuck out like a soar thumb.
