Skill in BJJ goes a lot farther than size. For example there's a blue belt in my club that's like 140lbs. It's harder for me to keep him down than it is for me to keep guys that are my size up to 200lbs and I'm only 175 right now. And these are guys that go to the gym and pump iron and I haven't lifted in 3 or 4 years. Position before submission, as they say, and the smaller skilled guy will definitely give the bigger man (even if the man has skills) a run for his money.

Tae kwon do kids are funny. We were having a neighborhod boxing matches back when I was like 16. The tae kwon do tough guy was getting worked by me and pulled a spinning back fist. He got about 3/4 of the way before I dropped him right on the chin.

Guess they didnt teach keep your hands up.

Its definitely about positioning and playing it smart. You have to wait for the right time to go for a submission too. Much bigger guys have an advantage just in shear mass and strength that is tough to deal with. I used to be able to submit most of the bigger guys in my club because they were a little newer to it and clumsier about things, but I was always hurt afterward. The big guy that instructed the class always beat the hell out of me, but I got stronger and smarter for it every time, and I did get him a few times too. And a lot of bjj is pain tolerance. Don't let them break your guard with just digging in their elbows. It hurts but its not going to actually hurt or damage you in any way. And you're probably giving them too much space if they have time to do that

Get your guard higher if you hate the elbows. Also, don't count out the small guys. That 140lber I was talking about regularly squirms out from under my side control or if I'm in his half-guard and jumps onto my back.

Thursday was my first practice in 4 months and I nailed the best guy in the class (amateur fighter, been training for years) with 69 position ezekial or darce type choke. I stuffed his shot and gave him the old cattle grab sprawl and he somehow rolled himself onto his back (I guess to avoid the guillotine) and I caught him on it. It was good

Yeah, I tried to work the guard up higher, but he keeps his elbows so tight in and his arms are freaking huge, it's impossible really. I'm gonna grab his collar next class, and work for a collar choke so he'll let loose. then work up a high guard, and grab rubber guard to keep my guard high, or try to do the scissor sweep. My bread and butter is front chokes though.. the peruvian necktie is my fav. with my long arms and legs.. i have killer leverage and it's instant tapout. bottom line is the guy is more than twice my size and is very good. it's hard to deal with.

Rubber guard is super easy to get out of. All the guy has to do is stack you up then drive his head into your face, either you let go or he can rip backwards out when you ease up. I'd just stick with a high traditional guard. Scissor sweep is good if you're small or the guy has a small gut, or both. Taller guys have more trouble pulling it off because they need to shrimp more to get the shin across the front. How about getting that high guard then when he tries to sit up go for a flower sweep. Your long arms should help you reach around his shoulder (if you look the sweep up on lockflow or something you'll see what I mean). I love the flower sweep, especially if they try to stack they leave that leg posted waiting on you. Works great on heavy dudes too with minimal effort.

Awesome sweep, yeah I noticed the big guy (caleb) kept lifting his leg to give himself a better base. looks like i can roll that into a quick armbar as well. If I can work into a mount, i'm gonna spin to north south position and hope he turns into a d'arce, anaconda, or peruvian necktie. those chokes are perfect for my long arms.

I love arm chokes... arm triangles, head and arm, 69 monson choke, anaconda, brabo, there are just so many chokes available from half guard, side mount, and 69 or north south it's ridiculous.
