Why does your tank look so green? Run some carbon man.

its not green, its actually like a tea color. its from all the driftwood/mopani wood. maybe in another 6 months it wont be that bad. it also has "daylight" bulbs in it for the plants.

if it was green it would be from algea and carbon wouldnt help that....

Fish=worst investment ever. My families money pit....

You don't even know how much it costs to keep running annually. Never buy a house with a pond unless it is some home depot $500 POS. I'd be better off tipping bartenders $20 for a tap beer. At least then they might actually give me a free drink.

all pets are responsibilities and financial burdens, that just the way they are. some are worse than others though. at least with fish you can breed them and maybe recoupe your operating costs.

considering this is a car forum i dont see how you can complain that they are a bad investment. how much money have we all thrown into vehicles on things that add 0 value. cars depreciate every day and every mile we put on them (unless you happen to have a collector item but lets face it, this is HMT).

Tarantulas - Find a box, buy a cheap tarantula (got my last one for $, breed some crickets. Practically free and no maintenance other than throwing them some crickets once every week or month or so.

Oh, and depending on sex/species they'll live 5-25 years.

The skimmer is a crappy little one. It says on the box that if used for main filtration its good enough for a 55, but if used with another form of filtration, it will work for 150 gallons. I forgot the name of it though.... It was 69.99 but im on the email list of my local lfs and they sent me a special for 20% off all filters so it came out to 52.20. And the pump was another 55. That was a pain in the *** to tune. I bought about 20 bucks worth of pvc and made a intake and return pipe with ball valves to adjust the flow. I had to play with it for about 3 hours today to get the intake flowing the same amount as my pump. But i think i finally got it. I know im going to have a problem sleeping tonight, worrying that thing is going to go off and flood my tank out or drain my tank.... Oh and then after all that damn tweaking i realized the intake pipe is big enough my little clownfish could easily get inside of it even without suction. So i cut open a carbon filter and put it over the intake, but then that slowed down the flow of the syphon to the sump just enough to drain like 1/4" every ten minutes. So i had to tweak it again for another hour. Damn irratating, but now that its done, im really happy with it. Got rid of both my HOB filters. If i decide to run carbon in the future, ill just put it in the sump in a bag. I put all my cheato down in the sump and put a clamp on light on it. And readjusted that big powerhead on the left side to go up and down instead of left to right. That way it will disturb the surface and promote better gas exchange. If i get a chance tomorrow, ill post pics so you can see what im talking about.

you just need either less pump or more drain... sounds like your overflow cant keep up. if that prefilter clogs youll be in for trouble. how many GPH is that pump? you dont need to tweak them to match or anything, you want your drain to be quiet a bit faster than your pump. it will never drain out more than the pump can put in. id get a second overflow or a smaller pump.

oh and dont worry about carbon, its not really that necessary. it looses its effectiveness after a couple weeks anyway. you will get the crystal clear water from having excelent bio filtration.
