Default Is the ZC build worth it

I've tossing the idea of building an ls/vtec for boost but then some one mentioned saving my money and just doing the dohc zc over. I want antother car so I don't want all my funds into the civic.

I was thinking pistons (prob susuki viartas), rods, apr bolt(head and rod), mild port and polish, and block posting.

Is this going to be as good a an stock ls/vtec turbo setup.

I already have the ZC which bolts right in where as the ls is going to need a whole new engine, tranny, clutch and mounts.

Any thoughts also how are the viarta pistons in a dohc zc

honestly thats good but if your gona go built get forged parts. why waste your time. if your rebuilding any way use some ls rods and a6 pistons to get that low cr your looking for. even with a low cr your only looking to get 14-15psi max and thats pushing it before things start to melt or break. if you really want to be cheap just get a thicker head gasket and some head studs to lower your cr.just my 2 pennies.

This is what i am coming up for my parts list for my little zc right now...

the real question is how much power do you want to make?

zc block
block posting
je pistons (9.1-9.5 compression , will mill the head to work out comrpession)
eagle rods
micropolished crank
arp head studs
delta 272 cams
p&p head
custom intake manifold
probably going to be a log manifold, but i might get wild and try something like jeff's ram-horn manifold...
t3 super60 turbo
2.5" downpipe
fmic, 2.5" intercooler piping, blah blah blha...
turboedit management
with the custom intake manifold im going to try and fit 2 sets of dsm 450cc's in there...but if that doesn't wrok either 550cc's or 750cc rc's which are going to cost a ---- load.
for the tranny
si tranny w/ quaifie diff. i will be upgrading the axles to something a bit beefer when the time comes
and centerforce clutch until that starts slipping.

going to be aiming atleast* 250whp but it will probably end up a lot closer to 300whp daily.

clutch will give out and be replaced with a clutchmasters setup.

that's what i've puttogether so far, and im sure jeff will be reading this sometime tonight so for him and anyone else what are your opinions of that setup i listed above(not meaning to thread jack, but more of a point as a decent zc build regarding the questions of the thread...)
anything else i should change? suggestions, etc

hope my future build helped

Jeff says those Vitara pistons in a ZC will bring the CR down in the low 8's. Plus they aren't even forged. I thought people were making such a big hype over them because they are forged, but they aren't.

Ask Jeff if a built DOHC ZC is worth it. That's one of only a couple motors that he didn't blow up.

What ssl2k is doing is a little more than what I want to put forth. I just want a little more out of the zc hatch.

I think the ZC stays with a slight build. I don't want to put to much into it. I think I would go to real rods becaus ethe amount to put LS rods in is just as much as buying real rods.

Besides I want a new project other than this honda. 'm tossing around stuff like a Dodge Omni GLH-S, Old Mopar(I'm from a mopar stock, dad own a 70 Dart Swinger) or an 86 CRX, 78 Celica w/MR2 Supercharge motor in it, Or my dream of a SR20DET Datsun 510. I like old skool so the 90 civic is a little new, but I want it for a fast and fun daily driver. So a built ZC is gonna be the power plant i think.

well if you just wanna do it cheapie style, get *atleast* rods and pistons and you can up the boost like a ****... like 15-20psi daily....tune it good and you'll be fine.

if you got another $165 , get a set of regrinds and gain a quick 10-30whp

Okay, I've been thinking and I might do a quick tear down on my engine ealy this winter. How much boost would be obtainable on LS rods and a6 Pistons. Is it worth it? Are Viarta piston better. I can get sohc zc piston for free, how will they do?

By the way what is needed to fit ls rods in the zc or is it a "get the rod and find out" job?

a6 pistons are the same has sohc zc pistons. If all you want to do is lower compression just get a thicker headgasket
