Retard only if you hear any signs of detonation.
You can go to 8 psi without retarding.
You could retard by turning your distributor counterclockwise....away from the firewall. retard 2 to 3 degrees.

Can anyone verify the whether or not the V/S-AFC hack would need timing retard due to ability to modify the maps?

Well this is what im doing. buying an adjustable cam gear.... getting my timing set to stock... install turbo kit this weekend... start that ---- up... let the ecu reprogram itself...for 20 minutes... drive around if i hear knocking ill stop... retard it by 2 degrees... drive around... untill i dont hear it anymore... (this is of coarse untill i can get a good price on an MSD BTM

)

Uhm, everyone here is talking about ignition timing, not cam timing. An adjustable cam gear will not help with detonation. Well, I gues sit theoretically *could* but you should just retard your ignition timing at the distributor for detonation.. and run better gas.
