Wierd boost problem *PROBLEM SOLVED*

I am working on an LsVtec swapped del sol, with an ssautoshit kit on it This think wont make over 3psi of boost and I cant figure out why. The wastegate is NOT opening, and as far as I can see there are no exhaust leaks, this is all brand new with fresh gaskets. I pulled the piping off at the TB and there is plenty of pressure there while bouncing it off the launch control. I noticed it has an aftermarket exhaust cam gear and it appears to be retarted about 4*, would this stop it from spooling any farther? thats about the only thing I can think of other than a leaky intercooler, but I will leak check the entire chargepiping tomorrow. Also the base timing may be retarted a few degrees, but i'll doubble check that tomorrow also.

pulling down the highway in 4th gear, no more than 3psi, could aftermarket exhaust cam gear be the cause?

do you usually buy just one adjustable cam gear?

Thats what I was thinking, but I have very little experience with aftermarket gears.

This is NOT my car, I'm helping a friend tune it.

I never thought of that, wow this is possible I'm gonna write that down, lol.

I dont think the exhaust cam gear retarted a few degrees would make much of a diff, I guess I could try setting it back. Is there any special procedure to lining up the timing on a LsVtec? its a b18b bottom end with a GSR head on it OBD1

Disconect the wg and see what you get when you run down the road.

Tried that.......about 3psi is all she's got. The WG isnt even opening, the car is very quiet like jago said the exhaust is prolly whats restricting me, i'll check it out tomorrow.

I'm not 100% sure, looks like a HMT downpipe mated to a crappy ass catback.

Thats the first thing that came to mind but I cant find the leaks, this thing is a mess though, all rigged up.

My friend had the same problem, he told me the same thing; until I want and took a look at it my self. Rev it up with soapy water.

Good idea,

I got a coupple PVC ends with holes drilled in em, one has a pressure guage, the other had an adapter for a hand pump, I stick one on each end of the chargepiping. I'll prolly try both tomorrow.

I had a problem like this before The valve on my wastegate was just chilling open because the lock nuts fell off.
---- pissed me off bad.

Im gonna go with fire ring on the waste gate or boost leak or MUFFLER BERRING.
BTW Im ------- wasted. ;D

I held my hand over the dumptube while bouncing off the launch control, we got 3psi, and the wg was not open or leaking, I took the dumptube off to doubble check at watched, same thing 3psi but no piston movement. I'm going back over there now to take a better look.

Thats has to be a boost leak in the piping!!!

RotaryGeek 01-19-2008 02:44 PM

Re: Wierd boost problem

yup sounds like a muffler bearing to me.

i think its a combo between clogged cat/shitty exhaust and a boost leak somewhere.

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks.

I pressurized the entire charge piping from end to end, found the BOV was leaking slightly, and 1 couppler had a small leak, Fixed the leaks and went for a drive. The boost raised from 2.9psi yesterday to a whooping 3.7psi today. WTF?

Exhaust is 2.5in. downpipe to a 2.5in. catback, BUT the cat that's in there is a STOCK CAT, wtf? anyway do you seriously think that the stock cat would be restricting the exhaust that much? well the car went to the body shop, it will be back friday and I guess I'll find out.

Smith-02 01-19-2008 04:11 PM

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks still only 3~4psi

you have a 3.6psi spring.

I would think the same thing but the WG isnt opening.

did you try to take the vac signal off the WG after you fixed the leaks ?

this is external gate? is it bolted down to the manifold?

RotaryGeek 01-19-2008 07:16 PM

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks still only 3~4psi

well as a last ditch effort change the cam timing back to stock and see if that changes anything. try gutting the cat. i have always heard your exhaust will only flow as much as the smallest part in it, so if its a clogged cat it could very well be the problem.

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks still only 3~4psi

I put the exh. cam gear back to stock, reset the ign. timing and pulled the line off the WG, still only about 3~4psi. I wont see the car for about a week now but I'm gonna whack the cat off and just weld in a straight pipe. thanks for all the replies, and help.

Just leave it open downpipe and drive it.

dont know if anyone mentioned it .. but make sure your wastegate flapper is perfectly sealing.

I could jam my dick in the dumptube without getting burnt if I wanted. The WG is not the problem.

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks still only 3~4psi

your boost gauge isnt accurate.

your turbo is defective, and has undersized wheels in the housings.

i cant possibly think of anything else right now, with all thats been covered

Re: Wierd boost problem *UPDATE* No charge leaks still only 3~4psi

I've pretty much narrowed it to the stock cat, its got almolst 200k on it and it was designed for a 1.6l, this motor is a ls/vtec, if it makes any difference between cats. Like I said I wont be able to find out for about a week.
