ya thats what the canister does .. it just dosen't let hydrocarbons out into the atmosphere that are coming from vapors in the gas tank, you have to have some kind of vent on the tank. older cars just vented wo/a canister. you can take yours off but it dosent do anything but save .1 lb of weight and give you some space in the engine compartment.
