It doesnt matter where your distributor lines up in those slots, it does matter but using those to measure is a bad idea. Get a timing light and make sure its set at 16 degrees, and 1/2 degree per pound might be a little agressive for a b7.
If you find out what your problem is post it up i'm curious.
