I learned to weld from a guy who has a bachelors in welding. Yup that's right, four years of learning to weld. Plus he works for Miller. According to him, for the most part anything you can do with a TIG, you can do with a MIG. But most of the time the MIG is more practical. MIG the ******.

 

i would buy the lincoln arc 220 welder but bah i h8 arc welding. Took a 3 month class and i sucked at welding even butt plates. As for materials. I was just going to use mild steel. Or should i go with something else?

Also shielding gas. For stainless am i suppose to use 100% argon or 100% co2? Keep hearing different opinions

 

I like those old school lincoln arc welders, every barn/shop has one. They aren't very efficient, but work well for the general need. My suggestion was against using a basic wire feed welder.

If you are doing a manifold, most people use MIG with shielding gas. Mild steel requires the basic 75 argon/25 co2 mixture, 100% co2 is also possible.

If you are going with straight stainless steel, more argon gas is required to displace the welding atmosphere to a zero oxygen level. What exactly do you have already setup?

I would suggest using 16ga to schedule 40 for the bends, this of course is dependant on the setup you are going for (once again). Check out the Weld-El bends, there are some links on here for the parts to buy. I will try and provide you with some links later to give you a better direction on where to go.

Hey fellas, been checking out the site for a while and just registerd to add my 2 cents in the forms as for the welding, just got out of college for welding technology, 75 / 25 mix would be our best bet for MIG on mild steel, and 100% for TIG welding stainless steel. it's most praticle to use a MIG welder, but it's all user preference, TIG is really good for the fancy ----, but for your manifold, MIG will do the job.

yeah so basically what everyone is saying is: Mig it, but don't use a crappy hobby flux cored welder, trust me it won't work. Use the gas kind.
