Default turbo on a diesel? go ahead and laugh,,,,,

I bought a 81 datsun diesel pickup cause the people couldn't get it to run(dirt cheap!), fixed a burned out fuseable link and it runs perfect. we needed a parts chaser anyhow. I want to slap one of my turbos on it with an intercooler, If I remember correcty, you don't have to do anything fuelwise on a diesel, am I correct? I got the crap, so I might as well put it on. should I use my subaru ihi turbo or the saab t3 for it?
ugly truck gone bad.............

Stock, you probably won't notice much of a difference. If you ever go to a high elevation (or currently reside at high elevation) you won't lose any power.

The thing with turbodiesels is you can't hurt them by running them lean... but you give them too much fuel and they melt down.

as i understand it though the deisel requires a smaller turbo because the exhaust isn't nearly as hot, the VW 1.9L usses a garrett turbo, according to the garrett page it's a good turbo for a 1.0L gas motor.

how big is the datsun motor? my guess is the iddy biddy IHI would be the better of the 2 on that motor

No, diesels usually use "smaller" turbos for their displacement because they redline at 3K.

The rule of thumbs is, a 10 liter Mack truck that redlines at 3K has the perfect sized turbo for a 5 liter Muffstank that redlines at 6K.

why don't you try looking for a turbo off of a power stroke diesel or a cumming turbo diesel (ford and dodge pickups). If you could get one I bet your red lines are pretty close?

Powerstroke - GTP38. Good turbo for 450hp (crank) on a 5.0 HO. Most of those guys pass them up... they like at least 450 to the wheels.

FYI, I'll be running a Cummins diesel turbo from one of the Dodge trucks in my CRX this summer.

this motor is only a 2.2 diesel. quite a bit smaller than the cummins or powerstroke. i'll probably stuff the IHI on it. I first have to find time to do it. trying to get my hotrod put together right now.
