Default Stupid Noob T3 Question....

Me and a buddy are trying to put together a turbo kit for his '04 Ecotec Cavalier. Now I'm not totally ignorant on the subject, but what I'm lacking is an understanding of the different available turbo combinations. I've been getting a lot of recommendations from people to use a ".42/.48 60 Trim T3". I was told this could be had off of a manual trans 85-86 T-bird Turbocoupe. Now this is where I get shaky. I've heard of so many different AR/compressor/turbine combinations my head is spinning. Now if I understand this right, ".42" is the A/R ratio of the compressor housing, and ".48" is the A/R ratio of the Turbine housing, and "60 Trim" is a reference to the ratio between the compressor inducer and the compressor exducer. Now that's all fine and good (providing I have that straight), until I hear people talking about "60 Trim" T3's as something different and more desirable than ".42/.48" T3's. Did I miss something? If anyone can be of any help straightening this mess of numbers in my head out, I'd really appreciate it. And if anyone would like to make a Turbo suggestion, this is an all-stock 2.2 Ecotec Cavalier, but it won't be remaining stock for long. He wants to run the turbo on like 6 pounds of boost with an FMU and an intercooler to start, then after cam/ignition/fuel upgrades (the bottom end will stay stock) he wants to turn the boost up to anywhere from 8-10psi. Given that information does anyone have a better suggestion for a turbo? He's on a tight budget, so it definitely needs to be something we can pick up relatively cheap. Thanks in advance!

All that other ---- gave me a headache. What I can say is, with a 2.2L you probably wanna start with something more like a T3/T04.

You may want to check out turboford.org. Lots of T-birds and T3 info on there. The only thing I know for sure it that the manual transmission cars had a more desirable turbo. Also, 1987 and 1988 cars had IHI turbos with unpublished dimensions.

I would bet that the T3 off a manual bird would work for you.
