If you are looking for a budget turbo. I recommend buying a blown one and sending it to blaast for a rebuild.
That's what I did. :) Spent 300 including shipping on the whole deal. :) |

Hey blaast, I'm bout to buy a SSAC t04e turbo and need it rebuilt(reason why I'm buying it cheap). I wanna rebuild it myself since I'm cheap and was wondering if you hook me up with a all garrett seals and bearings kit for it. Let me know how much for that...also let me know how much a rebuild from would cost too. ;)

ive seen the rebuild kits on ebay for around 80 dollars. its not that hard to rebuild a turbo. but it still needs to be rebalanced by a pro.

I was always for giving them a chance - since the quality has come up. But having talked a friend to give them a try - SSA proceeded to promptly ---- him over.

Straightening, balancing and polishing the shaft as well as boring the center section and properly assembling everything DOES require some specialized equipment. Those who think that just slapping-in an ebay rebuild kit + getting the shaft balanced by some local shop will do the job may have bad suprises... I have 20+ different sizes of bearings and piston rings in stock. Impossible to know up front which ones will be needed for a given turbo. How can the ebay guy know if you need 10, 15 or 20 thousands oversize OD or undersize ID bearings? :S What kind of money will you save if your shaft has more wobble than before with these new, generic ebay bearings? How much will that local rebuild shop charge you to only balance your rotating assembly?? 40$? 50$? add that to the 80$ for the ebay kit, you already spent more than SOME COMPANIES charge for a complete warrantied rebuild!! Parts and labor included! I will never enforce it enough: I support and encourage at 100% those who are trying to save some money in the scope of a Home made turbo project. Asian and used wastegates, bovs, manifolds and IC, home depot piping and DSM injectors will all give acceptable results with low compromizing. But the turbo, you don'T want to cut corners short on that. You need the real thing. Ideally brand new and at the very worst, a profesionaly remanufactured and warrantied one. |
