Good luck, and may the turbo gods be with you

Make sure to pot pics of the warped flanges and poor welds on the manifold

Sorry dude but that just lazy. Kits are just lazy. You could have a few months and a setup that will last.

my ss autocrap mani was given for free no problems after 3 days-250 miles of testing with some hard driving everyonce in a while, free doesnt get any better than that, i heard the old versions of the manis used to crack very easily, a guy said he had fucked one after 30 miles only!

Everything from SSautocrap has a bad rep for a good reason...my advice, if it isn't something that you plan on depending on, go for it. The only advice a can tell you for sure is DON'T use thier turbos!! I suggest Down2turbo on Ebay...

I'm with kevin, the newer SS auto turbos that dont say XS power or anything at at all on the compressor housing are good. Check the nut on the turbine wheel and make sure it looks like its been ground up, thats how their balanced. My buddies been running their new style one for almost a year without any problems. I would buy their turbos and wastegates, but nothing else.

oh and bumblezc... as long as you dont change the compressor wheel/turbine wheel and shaft, there is no need for balancing after a rebuild.

Re: ssautochrome turbos, any good?

I rebuild turbos for a living and I confirm all chinese turbos are crap.
I get XSP and YZ turbos for rebuild ALL THE TIME. They alway look brand new, obvious sign that they worked for only a few hours but the wheels are all chewed up, shaft way loose, housings falling apart because they are glued together, that stupid s/n tag on the outlet spout that makes the couplers leak boost and mostly, BLueish areas on the thrust collar and plate, sign of over heating, indicating that the tolerances are way off. To make them good, you have to change everything except the end housings by real garrett stuff, that's why for rebuilding a chinese turbo, I charge Twice as much as for Real garrett turbos.

However. I have to admit that the manifolds are OK. I talked to many of the guys who posted pictures of a broken xsp manif on the web and the fact is they DIDN'T use a flexpipe or attach the downpipe to the block so all the weight and movement of the turbo, wastegate and whole exhaust line rests on the manif. With such a faulty install, any equal lenght manif would crack. Yes they are cheap and of a very discutable design but before the got their bad reputation, I installed MANY and none cracked.
Wastegates and bovs: THey look good and work as well as the real thing and IMO they are a good way to save some money in te sope of a budget minded turbo setup.
So in the end, if you are building a budget turbo kit, you can get SOME XsP parts with absolutely no drawback. However, The turbo itself is the heart of the system and you don'T want to cut corners short on that.

Oh, and be carefull, I don't know who yet but There are some rebuilding facilities around who rebuild GARRETT turbos using XSP parts. I had some sent to me as well. You get REAL GARRETT housings but all the internals are CHINESE!!! You really need to know your stuff to tell the difference! These rebuilt turbos look real clean and are IMO very well assembled but they do fail the same as complete genuine XSP turbos so be carefull!!!
One way to find out: THe extremity of the turbine shaft is hexagonal on chinese turbines while it's triangular on garrett's.

word on this :y i did notice the same thing while installing mine i even had to bend it to align the downpipe properly, but a flexpipe is a must at least on my setup, mine hasn't cracked still and as some of you guys know i've been abusing the ---- out of it, im confident at this point so far, i saw a slightly cracked DRAG manifold on egay about 2 weeks ago. so yeah the ssauto invasion is on i guess :P
