Some problems with new setup
Hey I recently just finished my first HMT on my gf's cavalier. Well I believe I have a vacuum leak in the charge pipe or at the throttle cause the Turbo spools up and wastegate opens at 9 psi, yet gauge and MAP sensor don't see boost till after turbo is fully spooled. I don't know if would be cause by it but the BOV is opening while spooling which I would assume means the vacuum leak is at the throttle since pressure is higher at the BOV then at the Throttle plate, also the BOV shutters when going off. I can't really do much with it so much right now cause she blew something out after only 5 minutes of driving it since being built. Any help would be appreciated. I'll post pictures when she gets home.

Re: Some problems with new setup
First turbo install, so everything is KIND of new. But trust me it's NOT the turbo surging. the HKS whistles but shutters in low boost, which I've heard a few on videos do it so hopefully it's ok, I'll post a video just to make sure tomorrow when I tune it.
The vacuum leak was a hose that was neglected to be put in (this was her project I just did the hard stuff) but it's all good now, everything seems to be running right and working.
I had a mess of oil around and I thought we blew the motor but I couldn't tell last night. we were driving and something blew off her car but to dark to tell. Today though I looked and luckily it was only her drain flange gasket, which I made a new one out of red rubber from work, and about 3 feet of charge pipe off her turbo blew. but we ran new piping (never recovered the other stuff lol) So it seems pretty good now.
yes it's a Cavalier, yes it's her car, but she wanted a turbo'd cavalier and it makes her happy.
Heres the only pics we have so far, none are of the complete car done yet.
We are running a race built head, the original owner we know very well, had it done and took off a full second off his 1/4 time. He gave us the whole motor since it can't run high lift rockers and he used them and blew the head. But we are running stock rockers but rest is built and car ran great tonight.
It's a fully stock bottom end, and stock flywheel and clutch, untuned and 9 psi but boost creeped to 10 at 4k where we shut down, she was just barely slower then the cobalt which is running 280 hp at the wheels. Hopefully have it dyno'd soon we really want to have a fast little OHV underdog.
This is the balt while we worked on her cavalier
I'll post videos and more pics after. Thank you.

Re: Some problems with new setup
i call bullshit on the head taking a full second off of an N/A car, especially a cavi. i dont doubt the head is "built" and by "built" i mean dremel ported and polished.
and also, saying that this car, at 9psi, untuned is putting down anything close to 285whp is just plain stupid. the 2.2l is stock at what? 115 CRANK hp? and run something like 18.0 in the 1/4?
no way did it pick up that kind of power
however, besides the fugly log mani, it looks like a clean install

Re: Some problems with new setup
well, first up, try disconnecting all non essential vaccume lines,
get yourself a VAC/boost gauge and test vaccume, 19/20 inHG is normal(pending on compression ratio)
NOTE: this only works after the throttle,
and remove the BOV and let the compression surge go :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qRp6cRdRko
replace the map sensor line, if your leaking vaccume there you can say bye bye to your calculations..
