The engine is fuel injected, they are mechanicly driven by the push rods, connected to factory roller cam followers all located under the valve cover. The turbo's feed a blower which feeds the air box that surrounds all 8 cylinders. The cylinders have ports all the way around the bottom for the intake charge, they actually scavenge very well due to this design because the air enters as the piston is on its way to BDC. This forces the spent fuel mix out the top via 4 exhaust valves. The scavenging problem you refer to is on a 2 stroke where there are no valves at all, only ports at the base of the cylinder .The exhaust has to exit at the same time as the intake, at the same position in the cylinder.
