Default Seeking VGT Compressor map resources

Hi everyone,

I am another newb who comes from a different world than high boost street cars, so please go easy on me!

I am exploring the world of DIY turbo fitting. My candidate vehicle has a large, slow turning diesel, and I wish to augment the low to mid range torque using reasonable (8-12psi) boost, while keeping an eye for not running too far off the efficiency of the turbo at high revs.

I have found a very good candidate off a 1.8L gasser: the Borg Warner K04-2075, rated for 220hp. I plotted my engine pressure and air flow requirements on the map of this candidate and it looks good. Sorry, this forum does not allow me to load a .pdf file, otherwise I would ask you to review my assumptions and selection.

One thing I noticed in my research is that I have not seen or heard of any libraries of compressor maps of the variable vane or variable geometry turbos. Now that I have my calculations it would be fun to explore the possibility of fitting a used VGT off a small gas engine.

If you have any resources or recommendations for evaluating a selection of these turbo types, please pass them along this way and I would be most appreciative.

Thanks guys,

Rick

After poking around the 'net looking at Variable geometry turbos (and their admirers!), I have read enough info to realize that the added complexity does not seem rational. My old diesel is all mechanical fuel delivery and exceedingly simple.

I'll stay with an adjustable waste gate unit.

Use a properly sized VGT turbo for your engine. Sequential turbos like you are describing are extremely difficult to control, even OEMs have trouble getting them right (Subaru, Toyota).

What engine are you talking about? We can find the turbo you need.
