fact of the matter is...i understand most cases manifold works fine...but i've had a bad experience on one of my setups where there was a major leak before the maf on a blowthrough setup and the wg refference was pulled off the mani....spun the **** out of the turbo to make full boost and destroyed the thing as well as didn't perform the way it should have....the only way we found out was cause i finally drove the car and saw boost falling off.

in that case, even if you had a boost leak right after the turbo, it still wouldnt be able to create boost because it'd be dumping air into the atmosphere. I dont see why there'd be much difference in getting your signal from the IM or the compressor housing.

I think you mis understand Corky Bell... BTW, the only turbo Corky designed failed, miserably. Now he makes twin turbo Shelby Cobra replicas. Just put the ------- thing on the manifold, that's just how its done

Robbie is correct.

Getting the boost reference from the manifold is an easy way to bypass any small leaks in the system and is a easy way to cover up simple problems as well as get the boost level you want, but in reality you are placing the compressor in an unknown pressure ratio area, and possibly over spinning it.

wouldnt the compressor over-spin no matter what, no matter where the boost reference is coming from? True you're gonna get maybe 1-2 more PSI at the compressor than the IM, but in the end, they're all the same "hose".

If there's a leak right after the compressor, the turbo aint gonna make boost and over spin, if there's a leak at the intake manifold, the turbo ain't gonna make boost and over spin.

The only way the turbo is NOT going to overspin is if the leak is small enough.

If the leak is so bad that you don't build any boost, then that means the WG is not opening and the turbo is free to overspin from the uncontrolled exhaust. This is easy to spot and correct though, unless you're a retard and just keep driving it like that.

The very bad situation is when the leak is just large enough to facilitate the boost level you want, but the turbo is actually spinning so fast to flow that huge CFM (flow for the engine PLUS flow for the leak) at the low boost pressure.

The other downside is that at that point on the compressor map, it is so inefficient that your IAT's will skyrocket.

I've had that happen. It was a bitch to troubleshoot. Warped BOV flange.

exactl...guys...i'm not trying to be a cocky *** or anything...just sharing an exact experience that happened to me on one of the kits i built...it actually destroyed the turbo in less then 2 months
