Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
I have an Ebay mani coming in today, I have the turbo ready to install, I just have to bolt the turbo, mani, and oil lines up, and tap the oil pan. I have a guy at a muffler shop about 7 minutes away that is going to weld up the dp for it, and I was planning on installing the turbo and lines here, then driving it over there with no dp.
Will it be ok to do this? Will the exhaust gasses be hot enough to burn anything in the engine bay? also, is it safe for the turbo to run it this way for a short period? Of course, I was planning on not even breaking 3k rpm on the way over there... just takin it real easy... |
Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
it will not hurt the turbo in any way as long as you have the oil running through it. the exhaust coming out of the turbo might melt a little of your fan shroud depending on which way it is pointing. personally, i would want a filter on the throttle body and a filter of some kind on the inlet of the turbo so nothing harmful gets sucked in.

Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
I was going to try that but decided to get a dolly to take my car to the friends house where we welded everything. You can do that or take the turbo to the mufler shop and have them make a small temporary dp so you can drive the car there with no worries. Just make sure that all oil lines are hooked up and a filter is in place, I dont see a reason why it wouldn't work.

Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
I second that, try to make sure the exhaust isn't pointing DIRECTLY at anythign meltable. as long as it's a short trip, you'll be fine!

Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
Thanks guys, just wanted to check before I did something terribly stupid, which I have done before...

Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
unhook your wastegate actuator so the turbo doesnt just freespool....or basically coast over there if you can, either way
|
Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
you will overspool it and ruin your bearings and possibly mess up a seal. do yourself a favor and dont risk it. the best thing to do is get everything done and tow it over to the muff shop and have them make the dp.

ya maybe you can get a temp downpipe made. that how i melted my fan shroud. |
Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
eh...you shouldnt have a problem , especially for a short drive...i went for like two weeks with no dp

Re:Running turbo with no dp or ic pipes
what about having the turbo bolted up for like a week with everything but the IC and piping. meaning having oil, water, DP, hooked up just no charge piping, what damage will that do?
