Please clarify facts of 'clocking' turbo
Just because I haven't seen any clear statement, I wanted to ask...
Will rotating the exhaust housing or intake housing of a turbo throw off the ballance of the turbo? Or would it only get unballanced if you actually removed the fins?
I don't see how rotating the housings themselves will do it BUT there's notches on each side of the center section of turbo to match up with the housing...I've heard people say to keep those notches so you can put the turbo together exactly using those notches so it will stay ballanced.
I'm curious because with my 14b turbo, I want to rotate both sides (hot and cold) so I can keep the internal wastegate without modifying it, and have the oil feed facing up instead of down as it is now.

housings have nothing to do with the trbo being balanced.
u have got confused, the only part that needs to match up when putting the turbo back toghther is the turbine blade and compressor blades..

like i said, that's what i figured. HOWEVER, there are notches on the center section that won't let you put the housings (cold or hot) on any other way...so i guess i'll have to break off the notch so i can actually rotate it.
Only the ROTATING (spinning at 90,000rpm) ASSEMBLY has to be balanced together. Since the shaft and wheels don't stay at the same spot while they are in motion, it really doesn't matter where they start out in relation to the housing. And the housings could care less where they are in relation to each other, since they don't spin. Sorry if I confused you.
