Some of the guys in the warmer climates (SoCal, Arizona, etc...) say that it's next to impossible to add the extra heat to their cooling lines and have argued that's Honda's were not built to handle that extra heat. If you live in cooler climates, you'll probably be ok with just the lines.

High temp hose can get kind of expensive too... 5/16" rubber fuel line is like $4 a foot and it takes about 10 to 18 feet to pull it off, depending on how you run the lines. You could be cheap and sit and idle for 30 seconds, but I'm too antsy for that kind of thing. A turbo timer works but is $100 or so.

There was also the idea of filling the water jacket with dirt, but I always thought that was a joke

But yeah, I'd get another water cooled if I needed a new turbo.

 

I water cool my turbo on my d16y7 without any coolant temp increase. My expansion bottle gets more filled up, but coolant temp stays the same.

 

You guys got it all wrong. turbo bearing are like wheel bearings, they don't need oil i was going to run coolant to the turbo just to cool down the air like an intercooler.

 

that would be some mighty fine grease if it would hold them temperatures.

 

i probably did that let is sit at idle crap only twice since my car's had boost. i just drive in vacuume at very low rpms, speed limit speed, for about 5 minutes or longer, depending, before i reach my destination. the turbo gets hottest when it's seeing boost. while it isn't seeing boost, it's running cooler, and so is your engine.

 

Oil cooled = reasonable life of turbo
Oil and water cooled = longer turbo life

If you have it available to water cool, DO IT, I can't say that I have been in everyone's car, bit I have NEVER seen a car run hotter because of water cooling. Anyway, if you do have a problem, you can always take it back off...

 

It gets to 125-130 degrees where I live. Damn near every car out here is using 100% of it's cooling system as it is. I'm not going to be sitting in traffic overheating because I wanted to get an extra 3 months out of my $150 turbo. My motor is much more valuable and a bigger pain in the *** to replace. Plus, to fit my turbo and manifold in the engine bay I already had to downgrade my cooling system to a radiator that is half the size of the original. There are several thousand cars out there running non-water cooled turbos and they don't seem to have any problems.

gah this seems to be a trivial debate. it never ends there are always ppl on both sides. i've got a wrx turbo which is water cooled. i live in ny so its colder here like 2/3rds of the year. i already bought a turbo timer and i like the idea of not having to bother to run the water lines but idk. i think i might run em anyways. does anyone want to tell me exactly where i should hook up the water lines?
