Default Noob question about Engine Management...

I am looking to turbo my car with a basic bolt on kit. I will be doing 5psi daily, 7psi race. I was told by many people that a VAFC with a good tune will be more than enough for this setup considering the small amount of boost I will be running.

On the other hand, I know converting to obd1 (2000 civic) and chipping my ECU is probably the best route. I was just wondering what all is involved in this. I read the FAQ's and got that I need an obd2 > obd1 conversion harness. I also know I need to either purchase a chipped ecu, or chip my stock ecu and run somekind of program such as Uberdata, etc. etc.. I was just wondering how exactly one "chips an ecu". Would I just try and find a shop locally and take my ecu to them and ask them to chip it? Also, how would I get Uberdata (that's the program I have decided on) onto my ecu? Or would using Uberdata all depend on who I get to tune my car?

I just want some opinions because I want to do everything right the first time! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

chiped ecu is what you need to do. you cant chip yours because it is obd2. you need a obd1 ecu.

you could just buy one form xenocron, and he will give you a base map and what not, wich is probly good enough for 5psi. um you will hate 5psi after a week so i would plan on chiping it so that you can run 10.

you need to read better. and on ------------- ther are faq and install pages where it shows you what is needed and how to to chip an ecu. so look

Ok, thank you. I decided on 5psi/7psi because of the fact that I drive this car a decent bit, it is my only car to get to and from work, school, etc. I need it to be reliable, and I am not looking for a 12 second car here. A reliable 14 second car is fine with me! 10 psi on a STOCK ENGINE is a little too much. I know my motor, d16y7, it is safe to run 7psi "Safely".

My main question is this...If I buy an obd1 conversion harness and ecu, could I take it to a tuning place and ask them to chip my ecu and tune it using uberdata?

you can download the program for free on to your computer. then you can edit maps and make new ones. the tunner will have it on his computer.

when you chip your ecu you are really putting a socket in the ecu. the map for you ecu is burnt on to the chip. you insert the chip in the ecu and the car runs off of that. if you get a chiped ecu with a reburnable chip you gust take it to a tunner and they will be able to do the rest.

http://-------------/products.php?page=chipped-ecu you get a base map wich at 5psi should be fine he also has the conversion harneses.

So if I were to buy a conversion harness and chipped ecu from the website you listed, I would then only need to get my car tuned?

Could I just buy an obd1 conversion harness and STOCK ecu and take it to a tuning shop and ask them to chip and tune my ecu for 5psi daily, 7psi race (I will obviously be running a boost controller).

Thanks for any help!

on only 5psi chris could probly give you a good enough base map that you would not need tunning. if you bought a ecu and conversion harness you could take it to a shop and have them chip and tune it if they chip ecus in order for it to be tunned to 7 psi for the track you will need a nother chip or you will just run it out of tune. i would atleast run 7psi daily. expesially if you are going to get it tunned. that is fine for stock. and then you would ahve a good tune and wouldnt have to worry about switching out chips and what not.

your best bet. get a chiped ecu from xeno cause it will probly be cheaper than getting a ecu and haveing a shop do it and get a base map for 7psi. if you want go get it tunned, and would not worry about turning it up at the track.

Thanks a lot man, you have been a great help.

If I would get a chipped ecu with a 7psi basemap, could I get away without a tune?

most likely yes. id ask chris "xenocron" how good he can make you a base map. maby a little more cash. it wont be perfect but it will be beter than an fmu and hacks. you should pm him on it if you are going to get your base map from him see what he thinks he can do.
