made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

i got bored and decided to make a front mount sprayer from my old windshield squiter bottle. i ended up going to the dollar store and getting a bottle for it and drilled a hole in the bottom. gave it some JB love to seal it up and went to home depot to get some sprinkler fittings. ended up getting the 45 degree 1/4 screw in nozzles for $2 something and 10 feet of 1/4 hose for $1. had some T's laying around and used some extra plastic bumper holders i had laying around to keep the sprayers in place. i took out my cruise control when i put my first turbo on so i had those buttons on the steering wheel so i decided to use one to spray it. i just took it off and unplugged the harness that goes to it and soldered in two wires and ran them into the engine bay. works great ;D

lemme know what you think

where did you get the sprinkler nozzles? Nobody around here seems to have ----

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

home depot has a shitload of them. differant style and spray angles. they are in little plastic bags and liek 10 come in a bag. they weren't on an isle at our home depot but at the end display. maybe i could take a pic of the package if you need me to.

are these things really worth it? I've never seen like a posted dyno and chart that shows temperature change
I guess i never really researched it too much. I've just gotten into catch cans not too long ago.

you can use any bottle with your windshield pump but i will post pics of the squirter package

I don't see how water is gonna help cool your intercooler... if that was the case, why did'nt you go witha saab water-to-air intercooler instead?

ever got wet and took a walk? you get cooler, right? same concept. water-air intercoolers are for ballers ^-^

you need to have some one spray it and take a pic so we can see it in full working order... does it get pretty good coverage ??

it gets great coverage, but when standing still it doesn't shoot the IC but whne moving with a little wind pushing it it hits perfect.
thought it would be cool to put ice water in it and when i hit th edyno i will do a run with it and one without it

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

Putting ice in it would be pretty cool. I think that will be pretty effective. I always thought of trying to make some type of ice box container for the intake on the turbo. Haven't had a project car to mock on up on lately but that is gonna change soon seeing as thou i came back from vegas a winner;)

It will work.
Today I installed my bottle and motor. Still looking for the nozells as there is no homedep here.
We did tests with just squirting watter from the hoze over the IC results in a drop of arround 8 Deg c in temp. You can plug that number into something like turbo calc and it will give ya a number as in how much more power that 8 Deg c translates into.

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

i was gonna plug my IAT sensor up to my charge pipe instead of just hangin there just so i could datalog and see the temp with and without, but then i remembered that i just got tuned with crome ;). but there is a guy in town that has this sort of thing on a srt4 and he said it gave him an extra 10 HP on the dyno.

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

I actually tried a set up like this a while ago. My question is, won't that ice cold water go through your intercooler and then hit your extremely hot turbo/mani?

J-MAN 07-06-2005 05:16 PM

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

it shouldn't if you get the 45 degree heads and mount them close enough to the intercooler.

Perl87 07-06-2005 06:48 PM

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

Ive seen home made sprayer setups before. The two I saw the guys only sprayed the hot side of the intercooler. On one (which was also an srt4) they claimed 9 more whp and on the other (dsm) 12 more whp. I really like the sprayer set up. Never seen those nozzles at my Home Depot either but have heard of people using their windshield washer sprayer nozzles.

they came in a pack of 10 so i have some left over if anybody needs a few

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

good deal. my friend and i have been contemplating doing this as well, but we were probably gonna use winshield washer squirters rather than the ones you used from home depot.

it will work because when the water evaporates it is an exothermic reaction and it draws out heat. its the same premise as people sweating.

the only thing i might do differently is mount the bottle somewhere outside of the engine bay (not like yours is right on top of the manifold or anything) just to keep the water as cool as possible.

overall good ---- u got here

... and? The water would just sizzle and evaporate.

yeah ive always wondered about this. as your going down the road b4 a run would you spray or do spray during the run? wouldnt using co2 be better? do the same idea but with co2 and like one 45 at the bottom? dunno jut think out loud. good job

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

i could get some liquid nitrogen from the physics lab at school... that would work damn well but something would break. on a more pracitcal note i heard mixing it 50/50 w rubbing alcohol helps.

if i'm not mistaken CO2 will make your car run pretty shitty if it gets into the intake of the turbo. somebody corect me if i'm wrong.

hook the 12v upto the vtec solenoid. vtec water srpayer, exactly when u nee the extra cooling!

with water heat can be transfered out of the ic up to 30% faster... ie. making it more efficient

do your nozzles leak ive looked everywhere and i cant find a nozzle with a check valve or a check valve that will fit a 1/4 hose

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

I used a digital pyrometer on one of my friends high dollar NTX Ntercooler spray kit. He bought it for $400 and you know how much nitrous costs. With my pyrometer (laser) I held it in position while he hit the button for roughly 20 seconds. It never read lower than 2º difference and this was when the intercooler was cool already and the car hadn't been run for hours.

Silly ricer :(

Good pictures and write up, although I've done this back in 1992 lol

Are you serious? Please tell me you're not. You're not going to notice that much difference when the charge air is already cool and using a pyrometer to read the outside temp isn't really going to tell you all that much. What you want to measure is the intake air temp after a hard run and then do the same thing after a hard run and spraying the ntercooler/water spray. You should see a drastic difference. You could try the same thing with your pyrometer but you'd have to strap yourself to the front of the car. The temp fluctuations will happen faster than you can get an accurate reading.

Re: made a homemade water sprayer for the FMIC

n-tercooler sprayer is just a gimmick. It was proven on a dyno that the only increase in power came from the residual n2o that found its way into the intake tract. Its waste of money and a waste of perfectly good nitrious!
