Default Looking at T3's

Hi guys.

My original plan was to use an IHI rhb5 on my car because it was automatic. Well, recently I have decided that I am swapping to manual first, so I figured I might as well get a bigger turbo on my car. I am using a d16y8 engine btw.
So I started researching, and looking into T3's. After reading a few compressor maps, I think I like the look of the T3 45 trim. Here is my problem though, a t3 45 has a compressor a/r of 45 right? Does the exhaust a/r vary by turbo? If so what would be a good exhaust a/r to go with for a quick spool. I am hoping to hit full boost by 2500-3000 rpm and it must hold till redline. And is it logical to expect ~200whp at 9ps1 with a t3 45?

Also, I am not looking to buy a brand spanking new turbo. I want something from the junkyard. Could someone tell me what t3 45 trim is water and oil cooled, internally gated, as well as ball bearing, and what car I could find it on?

Thanks.

Don't know of any JY ball-bearing turbos let alone many that are ball-bearing at that small of a size. I don't see really any T3 on (I assume a D-Series, but you never specified) hitting 9psi at 2500-3000rpm. Um, a 14b or T25 wouldn't be bad and may hit 9psi in that rpm, but it most likely won't hold to redline and you'll feel the turbo dying out on you in the top end. I doubt you'll get 200whp at 9psi with a turbo you want to have instant boost. You would have to run alot more boost and thusly a later full spool time. Really, I would consider a .42/.48 T3. Full spool by 3700rpm and it will last to redline.

As for 45 trim and all, no the trim doesn't have a specific bearing on the A/R sizes. If you would take a look at the post in FI with the MidWest Build you can see 2 .63/.60 turbos and obviously notice their size differences. I have heard 60 trim .42/.48s and 45 trim .42/.48s. And to be honest with you. You're not going to find a JY that is a high trim, super clean, T3/T4 hybrid, Precision Turbo. Yank one off of a Volvo and call it a day. Hope this has helped.

I don't imagine you will find a turbo that will give you full boost on a small displacement motor down low, and then stay breathing all the way till redline. At least not one that is readily available, cheap and in a junkyard.

I see. So a .42/.48 would be one of the smaller T3's right? Where can I expect it to start boosting. I guess I am ok if the turbo doesn't hit full boost till 3500, just as long as it starts spooling below 3000.
Also, I have a friend who is running a T3 off a skyline, and he says that it begins to spool around 2500, and has full boost by ~3000. I know that turbo is ball bearing, which probably explains the quicker spool, but I could not find any specs on it. I was somewhat interested in it, but I dont know the trim, or the a/r sizes, or wether its water and oil cooled. I also read something about how the compressor wheel is ceramic and it has a tendancy to crack?
Thanks.

it also spools alot faster because that skyline has more displacement than your puny d16.

you will hardly find any turbo that spools early and keeps going all the way to redline. It just wont happen, unless you mix and match, i.e. a .48 hot side with around .63 or bigger compressor. You also have to think about the wheels, but thats just getting too much into it and too much money to be doing all that ----.

just stick with a .42/.48 maybe a lil bigger since you want it to hit redline.
