Default Latest with the slowest HMT project ever.. 22RE 4runner.

Latest incarnation of my setup. I need a blog, more time, and a bigger wallet...

Recent issues resolved:
1) Turbo filter feed - now running Mobile 1 22RE oil filter in line to the turbo. Yes, two seperate filters. The filter gets great reviews - I've found that turbos are much more sensitive to new engine debris than our engines are and I've killed one turbo post FRAM filter. You can see the filter and braded feed in this photo:

2) Spark blow out. Truck was falling on it's face between 7-10 psi. I bumped the dwell up from 3.0 to 3.6ms (megasquirt thing) - seems to have great spark now. Tuning issue.

I'm running 12psi of boost right now on 93 octane pump gas.
I'm estimating 200hp, but I should have a dyno run to back that in the next couple of weeks.

Latest incarnation is a BorgWarner (Bullseye brand) t04b turbo. It's good for 400hp, Bullseye says 200-400, but as I'm on the low side of that, I'm probably going to change to a smaller turbo. It's a laggy beast, not really hitting boost until about 3k RPM. At 3k RPM it takes off like a beast, but I prefer a little more down low. As I'm not letting it go past 12psi right now, no reason to keep a huge turbo. Nice looking thing - stainless hot side, oil cooled - it does give off a lot of heat though. I built a heat shield for it and added some ugly fiberglass header wrap to the underside of my hood.. It's made a drastic difference at the hood, but it's still pretty hot under there.
Intake air temps are in the 160s.

I'm going to tune past 12psi soon and get this thing on a dyno.. To make sure my motor survives, I'm doing two things:

1) Installing Knocksense with the factory knock sensor. It'll trigger an LED and datalog to let me know if I detonate. http://www.viatrack.ca/
I've temporarily installed it just to see if the stock sensor could be used.. Seems to work, no actual miles on it yet.

2) Order some torco, which does great things to 93 octane. I've already killed one wideband sensor by running 100LL (avitation fuel).. I knew the 100LL was not good for the 02 sensor, but I killed it in very short order. This should give me a bit of a safety factor on a dyno.

Remaining issues:
1) Still have a bit of jump in my tach.. I think I've narrowed this down to a defective ignitor or bad connection at the instrument cluster itself. Trying to find spares of both. The tach jump does not impact timing or spark.. it's just an annoying glitch.

2) I need to setup fast idle of AC. Running the AC and trying to maintain a reasonable idle isn't working very well.. Basically I need a stock VSV and the fast idle valve that was orginally on the upper plenum... Anyone want to part with one or both for a little goodwill or some 22RE consulting here in Austin?

3) Turbo too large for my tastes. Plan is to dyno it with the t04b and then turn around and swap for a t3 .60/.63 that I've got... The t3 is water cooled and has much faster spool, air flow should be good for 300hp at about 14-15psi. I've got the exhaust setup so that it only takes about 1/2 hour to swap out a turbo.. Here's a photo of the t3 next to the t04b. Doesn't look much different, eh? The exhaust turbine on the t04b is huge compared to a t3.

^ You said that twice, I think he would've read it the first time and been fine.

I don't know where I'm getting this, but didn't the turbo models come only with red interior? Or was there something special about the interior of the turbo models? I cant remember.

Turbo 4runners and Toyota trucks are sick.
