I'll play Devil's Advocate.
2nd option. Buy the kit and swap out parts for better versions later. The kit will be faster, so if you have the $$ and want it quick, that's a good option. I would definately do it with modifications in the future in mind though.

In most cases if you look at how much a good kit costs, for the same price you can have a good HMT setup and forged internals.
A good turbo kit costs between $2000-$3000 this is not your shitty SSAutocock kit either. ok so remember this is just the kit. now lets break down an HMT setup with forged internals.
Remember these are roughly estimated prices based on what I know is out there.
Tuner toys rods = $250
SRP pistons = $400
Custom manifold = $100-500
Turbo = $100 - 300
Intercooler = $150
wastegate = $150
charge pipes = $100 if even that
BOV = $25 - 100 depending on what you want.
Total = $1275(standard mani and cheaper turbo) - $1950 (ramhorn and better turbo)
Remember that this is with forged internals.
Sure they are the cheapest ones you can find but you can run 300-400 hp on this setup with a good tune, ok so now we get the basics out of the way you've got yourself a kit
so here is all the stuff you'll need to build a good kit, now you need fuel management, if youre like me and know someone that can tune then this part is even cheaper.
Fuel management breakdown is
Injectors 50-100(DSM)
Chipped ECU 25-150 depending on if you do it yourself or not.
Guages 100-200
there are also options like a wideband controller and such, but on a basic setup you dont need it.
so now your total is $1450 - $2400 about the price of lower end kit by a name brand company, need I remind you the kit gives you the basic crap some of which you'll upgrade anyway, and there is no way that you will get forged internals with your kit for that price, so you see for under $3000 you can have a very strong and reliable setup.
