Mine is red lined at 4750rpm. It runs out of puff long before that though.

Upgrades are available - its probably that smelly old diesels are used for towing stuff coz the torque curve is available at low revs - much better to play with petrol.

Audi are racing diesels http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_R10 - 40psi turbos and injectors running to 23000psi -WOW

And these guys mod diesels http://www.piersdiesel.com/DodgeProducts.htm

Until recently you couldn't do much to get a lot more power out of a diesel because most diesels used a mechanical injection pump. An increase in air alone will get you a minor boost in power. If you want to take maximum advantage of increased air flow you must change the amount of fuel injected by the injector pump in some way. Most injector pumps have a few adjustments that can be played with, however thats only good up to a point. Beyond that the injector pump must be modified or replaced which is expensive. The amount of components that had to be changed tended to price an upgrade much higher than most people were willing to shell out of their pockets in one lump. This essentially killed the after market. An intercooler and a high flow exhaust for a turbo charged diesel is about the extent of cost effective upgrades for a diesel with a mechanical injection pump.

On my Mercedes 300SD(which has a mechanical injection pump) I have put a cherry bomb muffler on it and put a slightly more efficient compressor wheel on the turbo. This has added maybe 2 to 4hp. I plan to intercool it which will add another 5hp without any fuel adjustments to the injector pump. After adjusting the injector pump I can expect another 20 to 30 hp. People have modified the injector pumps by machining them out and putting bigger fuel plungers in them. Doing this with many other modifications to the intake and exhaust has allowed them to get 400+ hp out of the stock 125hp engine.

Modern diesels use MAF sensors and computer controlled common rail injection. This means that a hotter cam or a better intake will yield a bigger gain than they would with a mechanical injector pump. There is an after market for modern diesels.

you will want to get bigger primary jets for sure, probably have to try a few different sizes until you get it where it needs to be. also, make sure the fuel float won't colapse under boost. those are the two main things that you need to take care of when doing a blow thru carb setup
